Surnames: Donle, Donnelly, Kelley
I am looking for information about Abner James Donnelly, who was born in NY ~1829. He married a Mary J.________, who was born in NY ~1830. They lived in Newark, NJ and then moved to Providence, R.I. in 1872. This is when they changed their name to Donle. Their son, Charles B. Donle is my great-great grandfather. I am looking for information about Abner and his wife and information about Charles B. Donle's wife - Sarah E. Kelley, who was born in Pennsylvania around 1863.

Abner Donle is my great grandfather. He was an artist in Providence, in fact one of the founding members of the Providence Art Colony. He worked mostly in Charcoal, pencil, and water colors. I am pretty certain that his wife's last name was Potter as they named their first son Harold Potter Donle who was my grandfather, who gave his first born son the same name and now I am the third generation to have that name. I thought Charles was one of Abner's brothers. I did not know that Abner and his wife had any other children other than my grandfather. I hope this helps you. You can contact me if you wish at hdonle@comcast.net

The Abner Donle that I am referring to his your great-great grandfather. Here is the info that I have:

Abner James Donnelly/Donle (born in NY ~1829) married a Mary J. ______ (born in NY Aug. 1830). My grandmother (Dorothy Miriam Donle) told me that they changed their name from Donnelly to Donle to distinguish themselves from the Irish Catholic Donnelly's. The family was of Irish descent, but from Northern Ireland (Protestant and not Catholic). In those times, Irish Catholics were discriminated against in America.

Abner James Donle and Mary J. Donle's Children:

William C. Donle (born 1854)

Maria E. Donle (born 1856)

Charles Beecher Donle (my Great-Great Grandfather) - (born 1858; died 1937)

Abner D. or B. Donle (your Great Grandfather) - (born 1863 in NJ)

Frederick H. Donle (born 1868)

That's funny I was told that the name was changed in New Jersey and that the reason was that the person requesting the change (I was never told who that was) was tired of having his reputation besmirched by reading in the local paper about his brothers being arrested for brawling.

That's nice, but the story about the brawling is more interesting. LOL

Earl Raymond Donle, 1890-1933 was brother and only sibling of Harold Potter Donle, B.1888. Do you have a date of death of HPD?

Charles Beecher was brother to Abner Doubleday Donle who was married to Miriam Greene Potter.
