I have the privilege of initiating the first message on the Ernst forum.

I have information on the earliest usage of ERNST as a family name (945 AD) and also documentation on changes to ERNST during the middle ages such as the change by Ernestus I who changed his name to Ernestus Ernst I.

Now on to my roadblock: I am looking for ancestors of Herman Ernst, who lived in the Kingdom of Hannover; born in 1815 -- probably in the town of Hildesheim; had a son Herman born in 1837; they both emigrated to the United States by the early 1850's as they were already registered to vote by the 1860 census.

The elder Herman Ernst settled in lower Manhattan and had a hotel at 80 Broadway. His wife's first name was Luissa.

The younger Herman wound up on Staten Island, NY and married Mary E. Goblet who was born in France around 1840.

Our tree is posted at FamilyTreemaker.com and MyFamily.com

Any information would be appreciated.

Hi, I have been trying to do some Ernst research...My father is Frederick harrison Ernst, b. Nov. 18, 1925 to Arthur Cornealius Ernst, b. Dec. 28, 1891. His father is Georg Frederick Ernst, b. March 2, 1835 in Kirshheim- Bolanden, Germany. Married Suzanna Wilz b. April 22, 1836 same place, married in NYC on May 24, 1858. He was a gambler and gambled the house away, Suzanna threw him out of the house, she had 3 small boys. Wondering what happened to him, when and where he died.

try contacting
Kirchenbucharchiv der Diozese Hildesheim
Postfach 10 02 63
D-3200 Hildesheim
It does cost for research.
They found my Ernst from Hasede, a village
near Hildesheim. Seems all Catholic Church
records were kept in the archives there.

Dear Mr. Ernst, Do you know of a Christoff J. Ernst?
He was orginally from Hanover and immigrated in 1854 to
Missouri. His son Anton Henry also came and possible
other children are Theodore, Anna, Sophia and
August. Any help would be appreciated.
