I have a John Hartling in my family. I have found the name as Haertle, Haertley, Haertling,Hartling and Hartley. My John died in Pennsylvania,1906 born in Germany,ca.1825/28 .He had a son named John, b. 1850's who may have had a son called John. If you think there is a connection, I will be glad to share the info I have.

hi...i'm so glad to hear from you. i have not had any success in finding any past relatives. my great grandparents, John and Marie, may have been related to you.

further information that i have on the haertel family is:

John married Marie in Germany. They had a daughter Regina in 1911 in Germany. (this may have been John's sister.)

then after the 3 of them came to the US, they had a daughter, Dorothy and a son, John. John is mid-60ish now. he is a retired teacher in PA and now owns (or recently) a bakery. both Dorothy (around the same age as John) and John have lived in PA.

Regina (my grandmother) married James McQuarters. they had 3 children--James, Delores, Donald. James was my dad, born in 1930; he passed away in 1990. Donald passed away @ 1988. Regina's husband, James, passed away around the mid to late 1980's, also. The deaths went: James, my grandfather... then the next year ...Donald, my uncle... then the next year... James, my dad. there seems to be a lot of cancer in my family. they all died from some type of cancer.

i have tried looking for the entry into the US, but have had no luck on the ship or the date of entry. Dorothy (brother of John) for some reason doesn't like to talk of the past. she kind of begrudging sent me the information on my great grandparents just in the past year... after many years of asking. she has said that my grandmother, regina, (her sister) was so much older than she (maybe 15ish years), that she really didn't have that much contact with her. she has even sent a picture of john and marie, probably taken in the late 40's early 50's...since john died in 4/53. if i can get it scanned, if you like i can try to e-mail it to you for a resemblence to your family.

thanx for getting in touch with me. right now, i live in virginia. all the rest of my family live in pittsburgh, PA. as you can see from my e-mail, my name is regina (gina) ...named after my grandmother. i was born 11/15/56 in pittsburgh, PA.

i have very rarely spoken to John. if you want me to relay some information or questions to him, i would be glad to get the number and give him a call.

God Bless You

the only family i have by the last name of haertel lived (as far as i know) in PA.

i know that my great grandparents came from Germany. They would probably have come through the NY port from the ship. Their names were John and Marie Haertel. They had a daughter, Regina, born in 1911 in Germany that came to the US with them. After the 3 of them came to the US, there were two more children born to John and Marie in the US...John and Dorothy. Regina was probably about 12-15 years older than the two of them.

any similarities?

My Father was Richard Haertel and after a little research of the name, I found out that Haertel is the American version of Hartel Which is a very popular name in Germany. There is a car company that makes convertable tops named Hartel. I look in phone books all the time and some times I find other Haertel's 3 in Tucson Az alone. But I never met anyone else with my name. People have mispronounced it and Lord knows mispelled it. I do not think I am related my father was an only child, no no real cousins that I know of. Just thought you might like to know a little info on the name ...bye haertel27

I am the great great granddaughter of Johan and Margarethe Haertel who came to S E Wisconsin in the 1840s or 1850s from Germany. I'd love some more info about their families. I have never posted or used a board like this before, so I'm not sure what to do.
