I am unaware of Martin Hittinger, but I am truly delighted to see another branch of the family. My father was William S. Hittinger from Weatherly, PA. His father was Reuben Francis Hittinger and was married to Kate Smithcors from Blackcreek, PA.

My great grandfather was Frederick Hittinger. I am at school and am working from memory. My computer is down at home, so using the school's.

Our family is in the process of doing a search from our side which has grown immensely. Where are you from? Any more info about yourself would you share? Have you been to Germany to do research? I understand that there is a "Hittinger" county or city in Germany. I need to spend more research time, but am busy as a teacher.

In reply to your mail of 9/18. I know there was a large group living in Brooklyn, in the 1940s. When I was a child I remember going there to visit with my grandparents. Martin and Florentine. Remember Mary and Joseph. Aunt Janet.
Living in Penn. was Peggy Steger and her son Jack. They lived somewhere near Wilkesbarre. Have been told Martin and Florentine both came from Alsace. I have some info back further but cannot be confirmed. No,have not been to the old country. There is no living relatives that I know of right now. It was a pleasure hearing from you. Maybe our correspondence will shed a little light on the name and its origin. You can e-mail me at walooka@bcinet.net Hope we can help each other. Bob Hittinger

Thanks for the info. I will forward info on to other members of our family who are also doing research.

Sorry for the delay in my response, but I wasn't expecting a reply so quickly and when I first checked my mail, I didn't realize it was a direct reply. You know how junk e-mail is too. Excite.com is the worse. Yahoo.com wasn't as bad until I added excite.com to my e-mail.

My father's family are in Weatherly, PA, which is not that far from Wilkes-Barre. I bet there is a connection. thanks:)!

Ann,

Frederick Wilhelm Hittinger was also my gggrandfather. I am a descendant of his first son, Henry Grant. The Hittingers who settled in the Rockport/Laurytown/Weatherly Area of Carbon county originated in Lehrensteinsfeld, Wuerttemberg. Their German name was Huettinger.

I can provide you with a lot of other information, if you are still interested.

Jeff

Jeff,

I am fairly certain that Ann's Frederick was a German immigrant. His father was Johann Georg Huettinger, born in Lehrensteinsfeld, Wuerttemberg.

BTW, I like your name!

Do you know of a John H. Hittinger, born about July 1853 from Germany? He married Caroline LUTZ about 1875, and they had 7 children that I know of: (1) Harry, born May 1876, PA; died May 1909 and buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Wilkes-Berre; (2) Clara L., born Jul 1877, PA, married Fred Gross, I believe; (3) Bessie, born Aug 1881, PA, never married; (4) Edgar Stark Hittinger, born Dec 1883, PA, don't think he ever married; (5) Caroline J, born 8 Jul 1889, Ashley, Luzerne, PA, died 16 Apr 1968, Ashley; married William Henry SWARTWOOD 18 Jun 1914, Ashley; (6) John L., born Sep 1891, PA, died 16 Dec 1980, married Rachel (surname ?) about Sep 1915; and (7) Elva, born Oct 1894, died Jan 1979 as per the SSDI, family records had 27 Dec 1982, married Harry Aten about 1920.

Do any of these names and families sound familiar to you?
Most of the information I have on this family came from census records, except for some information from a person from the Lutz line--John H's wife, Caroline Lutz--who had some information on the Hittinger's.

Perhaps you could provide some names and dates? I have no known Hittingers in my tree in the Cincinatti area, but a little more specificity might be helpful to others.
