Brad, I just saw your message. I presume by now you have discovered you will not be able to connect directly with Thomas Jefferson, the Third President of the United Sates, unless you are of african-american descent, as Jefferson had no legitimate sons except for one proven son, Eston Hemmings Jefferson, born of his relationship with Sarah "Sally" Hemings. Thomas Jefferson was one of ten children born to Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph. I have been researching the Wynne Line which connects to the Twitty Line. I have quite a few history books in my personal library that am using in my research. By the way, the Wynne line connects to Thomas Jefferson's line through Martha Jefferson, daughter of Thomas Jefferson I and Mary Branch. Martha's brother, Thomas Jefferson II married Mary Field, the daughter of Peter Field and Judith Soane. Thomas Jefferson II and Mary Field were the parents of Peter Jefferson, the father of Thomas Jefferson, the Third President of the United States. You will find a lot of research on Jefferson's maternal line, the Randolphs. Anyway, I would be happy to look in my books and see what, if anything I can find that might link with you. Let me hear from you if this information helps.

I wish to add a CORRECTION to the statement that Thomas Jefferson was "proven" by DNA to be the father of a Hemings.

I assisted Dr. Foster with the Jefferson-Hemings DNA Project and NOTHING of the kind was proven. Even the old original James Callender Campaign Lie of 1802, the Jefferson-Woodson claim was DISPROVED...NO match. See www.angelfire.com/va/TJTruth and www.tjheritage.org.

In the Alb. birth/death records I found where a Wormley Hemmons died at Benjamin Franklin Randolph's on Jan 1, 1857. He was owned by Randolph (a grandson of Jefferson) when he died. He has to be related to the Hemmings of Monticello and/or Wormley Hughes who was a also at Jefferson's Monticello. He was 36 when he died so he was born in 1821. I'm not saying its related to the Sally Hemings/Jefferson question. Just here is some new Hemmings/Hemmons person. Cinder Stanton was not aware of it and I emailed Cyndi Burton about it.. It turns out that Joel Wheeler (who Uriah Levy hired as overseer of Monticello in 1860) was manager of Benjamin Randolph's before he went to Monticello in 1860. [reference Wheeler vs. Bailey Alb. chancery case of 1883].

It is distubing when people like yourself print rumour and inuendo as the truth. Sally Hemmings descendents had claimed for years to be descended from Pres. Jefferson and after the Dna tests were completed the only one found to have Jefferson dna was from the Eston line. That does not prove to be conclusive evidendece of Thomas Jefferson's parentage but could have been from any of the numerous Jefferson men that were in and out of Monticello. Before corrupting the reputation of a great man get the facts because this is genealogy which is based on facts and proof and should not be confused with the "Maury Show".

Hello, I am a direct decendent of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings. So it is true. There was a DNA testing done on my family and it concluded that the stories passed down in my family for generations were not just tall tales. This is also known and widely accepted at Monticello. And President Bush Jr. even invited my family to the White House for Thomas Jefferson's birthday.
I come from Madison Hemings (1805-1877) who married Mary McCoy (1808-1867) does anyone know anything about her, or their child Sarah Hemings?

There is absolutely NO proof that Thomas Jefferson fathered ANY Hemings child. I assisted Dr Foster with the DNA test and it only confirmed that when he tested an Eston Hemings descendant there was a match of SOME Jefferson. Eston's family NEVER claimed descent from Thomas prior to a NY meeting with Fawn Brodie and Hemings descendants at which time she persuaded them to accept Thomas and not "a Jefferson uncle or nephew" as they had long claimed.

Foster would NOT notify Nature as I had suggested thus he participated with Nature in making a FALSE headline, "Jefferson fathers slave's last child." I knew with the Eston family claiming descent from Randolph (TJ's much younger brother) or his sons, there would be a match and there was.....it couldn't miss.

The earlier poster says she descends from Eston's brother, Madison..........then WHY does his family NOT permit researchers to check the DNA of William Hemings, son of Madison. They have no DNA proof of anyone who may be his father and no proof that Madison and Eston have the same father.

This is a vast agenda to degrade Mr. Jefferson.......don't be misled by such outrageous and unprovable rumors by Monticello and Annette Gordon-Reed.

No offense, but there is no prof that Jesus Christ exisited either. There are simply stories that have been passed down from generations. Although you may not believe the DNA testing done was not conclusive, it is widley believed and accepted by many historians.
Upon Jefferson's death the only slaves that he freed were the children of Sally Hemmings. Even though he did not agree with slavery, he was in huge debt and his slaves at the time made up the main majority of his estate's wealth. Instead of leaving these slaves to his white family to ensure that they had money to live off of he felt compelled to free them.....why?
Also, Martha Jefferson was Sally Hemmings' half sister. So, even if you dont believe that Jefferson fathered Sally's children it is evident that Martha's children and Sally's children are still related to one another.
AND, I highly resent the fact that I'm trying to "degrade" Jefferson. At that time in American history it was social norm for owners to have sex with their slaves. I truely think that Thomas Jefferaon loved his mixed kids just as much as he loved his white ones.

It is clearly evident that you are wound up with the slavery issue and know nothing of the DNA Study and what it entailed. I worked on it and I know. Dr Foster tested a known carrier of Jefferson and Hemings DNA........this does not mean THOMAS. It means "a Jefferson" and Eston's family claimed it was "a Jefferson uncle or nephew."

You claim that Martha Jefferson was a half sister of Sally Hemings. Have you read Dr and Mrs James F. McMurry's excellent book, "Anatomy of a Scandal, Thomas Jefferson and the Sally Story?" This well and long researched book concludes that that was only a rumor.....not fact.

There is nothing written that TJ loved any slave child as much as his own children.
