Laidlay Family

Pat McCann  (View posts) Posted: 17 Jan 2000 6:52PM GMT
I am researching my ancestors the Laidlay family of East Lothian Scotland - family home in the 1850 - 1907's Seacliffe House.
There is a strong India connection, many of the family having spent time in Calcutta during the early 18OO's. The Laidlay family married into the Watson family from the East
Lothian region in the early 18OO's and from
that time many of the Laidlay children carry
the name Watson as their second name.
Names include: John Watson Laidlay, Elizabeth
Watson Laidlay, John E.Laidlay - the famous
golfer. The Watson family were a naval family including Admiral Watson, Commander of
the the fleet in the Indian Ocean who assisted Clive to take Calcutta in the late
1700's. I would appreciate any info on either the Laidlay family or the Watson family. Thank you. Pat - Australia

Hi Thomas,

Sorry to say that I can't offer much help with your Laidlay search. If your Laidlays
tie in with mine I am yet to find the
connection.

I do know that John Laidlay Bashford was at
Trinity College, Cambridge, entering in 1870,
so it is possible that he knew two of my
Laidlay ancestors who were at Cambridge around the same time - Robert Watson Laidlay
and William James Laidlay. These two Laidlays were sons of John Watson Laidlay.
John Watson Laidlay was the son of John
Laidlay and Elizabeth Watson. Can you tie
your George Laidlay and/or John Laidlay Bashford into any of this? Do you know the
father's name of your Georg Laidlay?

My Laidlay family so far appears to have covered down the years
Lancashire England/ Glasgow, Scotland/ Calcutta India/ East Lothian Scotland /Australia and UKK. connections.
I have not found a German connection but you
never know maybe you are a long lost cousin!!

If you recogize a connection e-mail me back
and we can swap notes. In the meantime if
in my own Laidlay search I come across anything relevant to your search I will let
you know.

Laidlay

Hi Pat,
thanks for your replay.
I was very astonished, that I found
someone, who knows something about my
ancestors.

The fact is, that I have all my informations
from the will of John Laidlay Bashford
and the entry in the book Who is Who, Vol.1
from a genealogist from England.

In this book, the parents of John were named
Frederik Bashford and Mary Elizabeth Butler,
BUT
as I know, the parents of Georg Laidlay
(*03.05.1805 +06.09.1867) were named
Georg Laidlay and Agnes -?-.
There must be an adoption or something else.

Georg Laidlay went as a young man to
Amsterdam, where he was "riding teacher"
(I don't know the right word in English)
at the "Tattersaal". There he met Konstany
Adam Czartoryski, who was a polisch
nobelist, and went with him to Poland.
He married in 1834 Antonia Halitzka and
died in Slesia. He is my grand-grandfather.

Perhaps, you can find some links!

Can you send me your own email-adress, so
I can write to you directly?

Greetings from Germany,
Thomas

I'm interested in finding out about my ancestors and found Pat McCann's message on this board.
My grandfather (Nigel Laidlay) was brought up in Seacliffe House in Jedburgh (I believe the house has now burnt down) and he married Elizabeth Fraser and lived in Kishorn in the north of Scotland. They had 3 sons - Andrew (Andrew Malcolm); Kyle (John Watson) and my father Rorie (Nigel David Roderick).

I would love to find out more so if anyone has some information please get in touch! Thanks, Janet

Hi Pat,

I know that it is some five years after your notice, but I have just recently started my family tree. My great great grandfather was John Watson Laidlay and his grandparents or great grandparents were John Laidlay and Elizabeth Watson.
Hope you get in touch and I also live in Australia.

Regards Jenny

Hi Janet,

Am searching my family tree and came across your's and Pat's message board. I am also searching the Laidlay name, my great great great (maybe another great) grandfather was John Laidlay who married Elizabeth Watson.
I also notice that you mention the name Andrew Malcom, my mother had a cousin Angus Scott Malcolm.
Please get in touch and I would love to hear any family history, even if I live here in Australia.

Thomas,

My last name is Halitzka. I have been able to trace my history back to Nicholas Victor Halitzka who immigrated to the United States as an adult in 1886. I am interested in any informaiton that you have about Antonia Halitzka. It seems that all of the Halitzka's I have found so far are all related. I'm guessing Antonia and Nicholas are 1 or 2 generations apart.

Thank you,
Marijoy Halitzka
