There are many Lehrhoff's in the United States, most of whom live in New Jersey.

My Granmother's maiden nemae was Miriam Lehrhoff and my side of the Lehrhoff family settled in Newark, New Jersey. My Great Grandfather was Hyman Lehrhoff and Great Grandmother Sadie Lehrhoff. If your not aware the family had a bakery chain in Newark and it's mentioned in Philip Ross's Goodby Columbus. Very large family.

Actually, there was another chain of Lehrhoff bakeries in Newark, which was founded by Pincus Lehrhoff, and run for many years by his son Irving Lehrhoff, my father. The primary facility was on Prince Street with about four or five other satellite stores. Anyone familiar with Newark from the 1900s to the 1960s would definitely know the name.

Very interesting. My Grandmother Mary Lehrhoff's father and Mother were Hyman and Sadie Lehrhoff. Do you know where in Austria the family emigrated from. Also, is there a German branch. My family and I are going to German the end of June, we woud love to see where our family lived in Austria.

Honestly, because my Dad passed away many years ago when I was very young (1957), I have not kept up with the Lehrhoff's as much as I would have. However, I do know that the family emigrated from Galicia (my mother has told me they were "Galicianers"), which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now part of Poland. But I really don't know what city they were from. I have checked the Ellis Island web site, but it only shows them (Pincus and Mollie) coming back to the U.S. (from a vacation, I assume) on a steam ship in the 1920s, when they were already citizens. It wouldn't surprise me if Pincus and Hyman were brothers, or cousins at the very least. By the way, if you do an internet search under Lehrhoff, you should pull up a Newark historical site, which mentions the Lehrhoff bakeries from the 1920s, along with other prominent Jewish bakeries - Wigler's being one. I live in Maryland, and I really miss the good Jewish rye from Jersey. Good luck on your trip.
