I am doing a bit of research on my family history. I would like to go way far back and see where
the Leibel name will take me. I am a descended from Peter Leibel who married Madeline Herzog and they came from
Odessa, Russia, I believe. I think that is in the 1800s time frame. Is there anyone out there who can help me or that is
just interested in finding out more also? Feel free to email me at: p.kratchmer@sk.sympatico.ca

Hi,
My Great Grandmothers name is Lydia Leibel. I believe her or her descendents where from Austria as well. She just died a couple of years ago at the age of 99, near Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Hello Irene: My grandmother's maiden name was Irene Leibel. Her family lived on a farm in or near Centreville, Anoka County, Minnesota. Her parents were John and Caroline (Kraus). My grandmother was born in 1905, right in the middle of seven children.
Anyone knowing more about the Leibels of Anoka County, please respond.
Thanks

Hi! I too am looking for Leibel relatives. Wendelin and Elizabeth Leibel husband and wife both were born in Russia - I think Odessa. We don't know if there are other brothers or sisters. They have only 2 living children, but a mess of grandchildren and great-grandchildren looking ....they were Catholic. Lived in Hague, ND before moving to western South Dakota

I may have found a possible connection to the Sebastian Leibel family of Josefstal, Odessa, Russia.

The 1900 Emmons County, North Dakota Census lists a Wentling Livel and his wife, Elisabeth. Two farms away are Joseph and Maggie Schmalz. Maggie was Mechtilda (Matilda) Leibel. Could Wendelin and Mechtilda could be two of the three children of Joseph Leibel, son of Sebastian Leibel, brother to Peter Leibel of Denzil, Saskatchewan? It seems likely that they are related somehow being that they homesteaded so close together.

The 1910 North Dakota Census lists a Lena Black, Housekeeper, living with Wendell and Elisabetha Saibel.

The 1911 Beiseker, Alberta Census has Lena Black living with Joseph and Mechtilda Schmatz. Mechtilda was her aunt.

Did Magdalena Black stay with her uncle Wendelin Leibel and then her aunt, Mechitilda Leibel Schmaltz? If so, then Magdalena would be the daughter of the third child of Joseph Leibel: Katherine Leibel. There were Blacks living in Josefstal, Odessa, Russia. Magdalena married Philip Leibel, son of Peter Leibel in June 1912.

What do you think?

Maybe someone from the Schmaltz or Black families have some more information.
