Thank you for researching your Macholdt line. It is new information to me that the family are from Germany, though I did see on the Ellis Island web site that 19th century MacHolds came from German ports. There is a family of McHolds that live in NY and Long Island (one of them is listed in the computer at Stride Right shoe store, as am I.)
My line of the family lived in St. Joseph, Michigan and according to family lore, my great grandfather removed the "a" from MacHold to get along better in the Irish unions. Perhaps he was a German immigrant, seeming a Scot, pretending to be Irish.... I do know that his grandmother and my great, great grandmother, Anna Marsh Tryon, was born in Germany and was adopted by the Marsh family.
She married John E. Tryon
Nellie Tryon who married 5 times, her second husband was Ted McHold
(Ted was raised in Iowa and had a brother, Earle)
Nellie and Ted McHold (who dropped the "a" and died in EPOE home in Virginia)
raised one child, Ted (just Ted, not Theodore) McHold
he married Ruth Whalen and
David, Sharon and Rosemary McHold
