Yes the line does come from England. However I do not know where in England as my family moved around quite a bit. My Uncle Bill decided to move from Ontario to BC when he was in his 70's because he thought of it as an adventure. I know my Gr. Gr. Grandfather Alfred Meridew lived in different countries He was stationed all over the world. Where in England he was born is a mystery. What I do know is that my Gr. Grandparents Herbert and Mary Meridew moved to Canada from England between 1905 and 1907. Their daughter Jessie was born in England about 1905 and the twins Alfred and Edwin were born in Canada about 1907. I don't now when the rest of the family came to North America. I have a question about your second reply. Who had a son name Alfred?

Thomas and Caroline married in 1884 Brentford, Middlesex
she was the daughter of Jesse Young and Ann Hayter.

Which of their children does your family come from?

My surname (maiden) is Merridew so l am not directly related however very interested in all Mer*dew families.

Rachel

Read the posted message on the Meridew message board. I am not sure if it was me or Keri the message was sent to. However, I was in touch with liz Holliday a few months ago. I looked up your line on the information Liz sent me and it looks as if we have a common ancestor with Sarah Meridew b. 1786. Daughter of Nehemiah Merridew.

Surnames: Meridew, Owers
It would appear that Eliza Owers may in fact be Elisabeth Owers, born 1857 at Penrith (which is now an outer western suburb of Sydney - back then it was pretty much agricultural), Australia. Her parents were Levet Owers and Caroline Thurston.

If Eliza and Elizabeth are the same person, this would have made her 16 when she married Alfred Meridew, and 71 when she died in Brantford, Canada in 1928, and not 77. Could this be a transcription error?

Alfred Meridew, it would appear by the lack of assisted immigration records, probably paid his own way in and his own way out - more than likely here in Oz for the gold rush.

Nothing to do with my family, but I thought it may help.

Cheers,

Chris
