Daniel and Jacob were two of the five sons of
John Piatt and Frances VanVliet Wyckoff but
John wasn't from France. John was a third
generation colonist son of Jacob I and
grandson of the immigrant Rene' Piatt. Rene'
was buying and selling land in NJ by 1688.

I have a great deal of information on the Piatt descendants of Rene Piatt/Eliz. Sheffield. I am a descendant of Daniel via his daughter, Frances, who married John Strader in Sussex County, NJ.

Kathy,

Wow was I ever excited to see your note. My father is direct descendent of John of France. My aunt has traced back the family that far. However with the information I have, I am confused as to which of the five brothers dad descends from. We live in Idaho. Two brothers came here in the early 1900s to work the timber industry. Both had large families. I would love to find out just what kind of information you have on the family. We have some contradictory information on John of France. We've been told he wasn't really French, actually Swedish and the last name was Rose. We've also been told he was born in the colonies — this his father was born in France.

I am decendant of Jacob Piatt, brother of Daniel. They are sons of John Piatt and Frances Van Vliet. The sons names were John, Jacob, Abraham, Daniel and William. They lived in Somerset, NJ. Frances is buried in Trenton NJ. She died there in December 1776. My records go back about 5 generations before Daniel. This is a confusing family (at least my line) beacause they continue to name their children after a relative. My line moved onto Kentucky and later to Ohio. I also have a book named "The Tribe of Jacob" and another "Benjamin and Elizabeth" with names and dates, let me know what information you are interested in.

As I noted in my other message the Piatt line can be very confusing. I am from John>Jacob>Abram>William McCoy>Anabelle Piatt but I have traced the line as far forward to the 1920 including the different surnames. Feel free to e-mail me at anaflanigan@prodigy.net for specific info you need.

I noticed your messages about the Piatt family, and I thought that I would contact anyone who would have more information. I am decendent of William who was the son of John and Frances Van Vliett. I would love to compare notes with anyone who can trace past Rene(Reyneir) Piatt. Stories and such would be great too!!!!

Brad
I found a book on New Jersey Genealogy listing Rene Piatt and branching back into the Manning and Hull family. The books are located at the Cincinnati genealogy library. It is called First Family Settlers.
I will be happy to share all the information I have with you. I have branch down as far as the 1920's on several family lines and back as far as the 1500's (some info I still verifing. I am in the process of trying to enter it into my computer. (15 years of research). If you have e-mail, anyone is welcome to e-mail me and all send anything I can to help. Try to be as specific as posible on names - add spouse, parents, dates, wharever you can reference by. William, John, Jacob and Abraham's are in every generation and quite often several per generation. anaflanigan@prodigy.net

Here's some info you may be interested in. Frances Van Vliet is buried at Elm Ridge Cemetery in Middlesex County, NJ. She died in December 1776.
John died while in St. Thomas. John (his son) and William went to St. Thomas after receiving a letter from their father. Upon their arrival they discovered he had died several weeks before.
William was married twice- first to Jemima Quick (June 27, 1774) and second to Sarah (Shotwell) Smith (December 1778).
