My father was Michael Porcianko, born in Poland in 1912. His father was a land "baron", with acres of forests in what is now White Russia. He would export timber throughout eastern Europe prior to WWII at which point the Russians invaded and destroyed my grandfather's home and killed many of my father's family.
My dad was in a Russian labor camp for two years, somewhere in Siberia, before being liberated by the Brits and serving in the British Army until the end of the war. He then moved to London, England, and worked his way from waiter to engineering draftsman, buying two homes, marrying my English mother, and having an only son (yours truly).
My dad was paranoid about racism and insisted I change my surname which I eventually did, taking my mother's maiden name.
The only surviving immediate family my father knew of was a niece, Ella, who also lived in London.
I moved from the UK to South Africa for two years and, since 1998, have been living in the USA where I married a California girl.
I'd love to hear from anyone whose backgrounds may overlap.

My father's name was always spelled as Michael but it may well have been Michal. After leaving his home, he was captured and served in a Russian labor camp for two years prior to being liberated by the British Army. And you?

Sorry it has taken so long to reply. You and I may be cousins. My father, who called himself Michael but could easily have been Michal, had a father (my grandfather) whose home was destroyed, family killed by Russians.
