Looking for father of George Reis/Rice. He was born in 1844 in Waterloo, IL. (we think).
By the age of 8 he was living with a Samuel Alex Hill family 9 miles north of Freeburg, IL. He was on the 1860 census with this family. He signed up for the 7 IL. Cal. Co. M. in 1861. Many of his Civl War papers were under the name of Rice rather than Reis.
He married Barbara Betz in Mt. Vernon, Ind. in 1873.

Thank you for your reply. All the records of the Ries family of Duppau were destroyed by the Czechs after WW11. I am looking for survivors.

Both Reis Rectenwald are family names. Both families came to America about 1850's and settled in Pittsburgh, PA. I don't know if they knew each other before coming to America or not, but several children have married between the two families. Please write if you recognize either name to: msdudek@juno.com

My grandmother, Bertha Ries Zoerkler was born in Duppau, Bohemia in the1870s. She and her brothers, Wendel and Joseph eventually emigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio. Wendel was childless, But Joseph had several children. During the first WW,he changed his surname to Rhies.I think he has some descendents still living in Cincinnati.I don't know their names, but could be found in the phone book. I heard that one of them has done genealogy on the family, may know of survivors of WW ll.
