Joann,
My great grandmother's name was Marie Reisbig. She was born about 1872 and married my great grandfather Heinrich Schmidt in Messer colony Russia around 1891. They came to America with Heinrich's parents. I suspect that some of her family may have come over as well, perhaps at a later date, but have found very little info to go on. Do you know if your father had any brothers or sisters; or where in Prussia they came from?
If you think they may be related or have any info on other Reisbig families I would really like to hear from you. Of all our family tree that I have researched so far I am finding them the most difficult to find any information on......Harv

I'm researching my Risewick family and along the way have started to gather notes on the variations Reiswig/ Reusswig/ and recently Reisbig.

I could search through my various census resources and obituaries for information for you if you can provide a more detailed family listing, (ie birthdates and places/ death dates and places) for the known family members known to have come to the U.S. What was the date of immigration, and where did the family first settle?

I have a number of bits and pieces that might be of interest. My immigrant was Johannes Reusswig who came to Pennsylvania in 1742. The Reusswig name is very centralized in the Niedermittlau/ Neuenhasslau area of Hessen, Germany. I have been told by a German researcher that many of the Reusswig's also took the Reisbig or Reussing or Reising spelling of the name. This doesn't mean all Reisbig's originate from Reusswig but it certainly is a good lead to follow. This same German researcher has sent me extracted church records for Niedermittlau for the 1700's with Reusswig (and variant) families.

I also have Reiswig/ Reisbig extractions from the 1798 census for Volga, Russia that a researcher sent me from Brent Mai's book.

I belong to a Reiswig research group that has over 60 Reiswig researchers. If you would be interested in joining, let me know and I will send you the details. At our research group I have text files with the census and church extractions that I mentioned above.

You can also visit my website at (this is not the research group, but does give a good starting place for information on the Reiswig surname).

Denise,
As I had stated in my previous message; I have very little to go on with this branch of my family tree. Mary (Marie) Reisbig came across with her husband Heinrich Schmidt on the ss Aller on the 3rd of March 1893. She is listed as being 19 at that time with 1 child Heinrich jr. aged 1 mo.. I do however have her death date and location. 24 Dec 1946 in Odessa Wa.
I will be going through Odessa in early May and plan on looking for her obit in the local newspaper archives. It may also give me some info on any relatives, sisters, brothers etc. If you are interested in having this info for your database let me know and I will forward it on to you.

There is a Reisbich chart that has been prepared by a Russian researcher for the villages of Messer and Norka.

Information on this chart is available at:

http://www.ahsgr.org/surname.htm

I'm still looking to see if I have further information that could be of help to you.

Thanks for the info Denise. I'll have to have a look at the AHSGR Reisbich charts for Messer & Norka colonies.
I will send you the info from the obituary of my great grandmother if I can find it in the Odessa newspaper archives. Perhaps it will have some of the family members mentioned in it........Harv

I don't know but my grandfathers name and my great grandfathers name was Reisbich, maybe the last two letter were changed. My ancestors came from Messer, but they had an immigration background. And my grandfather told me, generations before he had lived, our ancestors were from Prussia. And he told me, they wanted to live in MI.

Hello Everybody! How do you do? You my ask me why i'm asking you, it's just because we have a same second name
and maybe we are wide relatives, it's just pretty interesting to know about Reisbig's ancestry, There aren't so many Reisbig names
on this planet, that i tried to find in google. And now i want to tell about my grandfather Alexander Reisbig and he will this year 85 years old. He was born
in Village Messer 1925, that was Volga-German placement in south of Russia, also a large settlement for russian
german on river Volga, that was founded in Age of queen Katharina "die Große". Anyway, his father was Carl or Karl
Reisbig or Reisbich and he had two old brothers Jacob and the second one i don't know his name. Also, as much
as i know, as Stalin's repressionen against german people were startet, his father with his wife and children have been
deported by Sovet NKVD to Siberian. Also two other brothers Carl and other one emigrated with their families to USA, don't
know exactely where in United States, therefor i'd very glad to know if i have any relatives in States. Actualy me and my family
emigrated from Kazakhstan in 1996 to Germany, where we are living now.
IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT THIS AND HAVE A NICE DAY!

Hi Alex,
You are probably related to a lot of us here in North America as most of the Reisbig families that I have chatted with were from Messer colony. My Great grandmother (Maria Reisbig) was born in Messer in 1872 and came to the USA in 1893 with her husband. Her brother Jacob and his wife Sofia came over later and eventually settled in Saginaw Michigan. There are a number of Reisbig families in that area, but so far I have not been able to make the connection. Maria's father was Heinrich Reisbig but do not have any further info.
