Aurea,
I am posting the e-mail I sent you which has all the information I have on the Rentas Family from Ponce. It is the same family. Like you I'm also looking for information about my mother's family. There aren't too many left.

Mario, Antonia Matilde Mercado were brother sisters who arrived in Puerto Rico from Spain. My great grandmother, your father's aunt, would refer to them as "Los Gallegos", because of where they came from in Spain.

Matilde Mercado married Domingo Rentas and had three children-Rosa (my greatgrandmother), Eulogio (your grandfather)and Anita.

Rosa died in April 1959 (about 2 months after I was born). She had 5 children
with her husband Jose Diaz, Rosa (my grandmother died Nov 1944 at the age of 22),
Guillermina, Jose, Josefina, and Epihania. They were all born in Ponce. All are dead except for Josefina, she is the one we are getting the information from. My grandmother had two children-Ana Rosa (my mother) and a son Celestino Cruz. Both were born in Playa de Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Anita never got married. She died while preparing for her wedding and was buried in her wedding dress.

Eulogio, your grandfather, from what I've been able to gather, died from some sort of disease which I have not been able to get a straight answer for.

Antonia married someone named Candelario. They had three children. I'm not sure about the spelling of their names but they are/were Sarito, Felito and Isac. Sarito is a female.

Antonia Matilde were fair skinned. They were disowned by their family because the men they married were darker than them. What I've been trying to do is find out when they arrived in Puerto Rico. Let me know if any of this sounds familiar. Let me know if you have any information that could help me in getting this information for my Mother.

I am also a Rentas. I was just curious to know if I had any more relatives. Here is my information:

My father, Carlos Rentas Gallardo, was born and raised in Coamo, Puerto Rico.

His mother's name is Gumercinda Gallardo (Second name is Martinez? I think.) She has two daughters named Bienvenida and Milagros. She also has, besides my father, three sons named Pablo Juan, Salvador, and Anibal.

I never met my real grandfather. My father's real father died by suicide long ago. From what I have been told, he drove a "carro publico" (taxi) in Coamo back in the day. He was a very handsome, "woman-player," who "went around the block" a few times and fathered other children. Of the other children I do know and love very much are my Tia Elba Ortiz and Tio Neftali Ortiz, who reside in Immokalee, Florida.

Does any of this ring a bell? Please let me know. My father and my mother, Margarita Quinones Torres, have been living in Penuelas, PR, where my mother is originally from, right next to Ponce, PR. In fact, I studied in the Catholic University of Ponce, PR, back from 1985-1988, and then I moved to New York, where I now reside.

Please reply back... who knows if we're related... :)

My grandfather was Etanislao Rentas Bermudez. He was born, we believe, in Juana Diaz in 1884.
He married Maria Ortiz Morales, who was born December 28, 1883. They had 8 children, two who died
very young. They lived in Barrio Lomas, in Juana Diaz. If any of this rings a bell, please e-mail me.

thanks.
