Hello!
I metioned this website to a friend of mine who is a Rettew,I knew she had a book on her geneology. The book was given to her by her late parents Charles Irene(Herr-Hoffer). It's called "The Rettew's Geneology", the last copyright was 1986. It was printed at Gordanville(PA)Print Shop. Most of the information in the book was from a website in Salt Lake City, Utah. The original spelling may be why the name is hard to find. The original spelling is RETTEAU the alternate of that is RITTEAU.
William Aston Retteau came from Northern France around 1658 settled in PA.(William Penn didn't get here until 1730)
I hope this helps in your search. Good luck! Marcy

From Rettew genealogy information I see on websites, there seem to have been a lot in Chester Co., PA also.

One of my great grandmothers on my father's side was named Elizabeth M. Rettew and came from a Lancaster, PA family (parents George and Elizabeth (Mumma) Rettew) There are a few burials in Medway, Clark, Ohio with a surname or middle name of Rettew. So at least by the 1880s, there were some migrations of Rettews elsewhere.

I found three books on various Rettew branches in the LDS catalog:

1)
"The Genealogy of the Rettew Family (1658 - 1986): The French Huguenot and His Descendants" by Rae Edna Rettew.
Gordonville Print Shop, 1986

(This book has not been filmed by the LDS as yet)

Variant spellings of the name: Rettew, Ratau, Ratew, Rattew, Ratoo, Ratous, Rattie, Raeu and Retew.

Cover title: The Rettew's genealogy.
Includes index.

The family name of Retteau has its origin in Northern France. William Retteau (Ritteau) was a French Huguenot of the seventeenth century. A hundred years of turmoil in France over religious issues caused the Huguenots to flee into England, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, Wales and Spain. William was born in 1658. In 1685, he arrived in America and settled in Pennsylvania. William married Mary in 1698 and had four children. William died in 1730.

2)
"Descendants of Aaron Rettew" by Annie Elizabeth Rettew Hunter, b. 1864

Microreproduction of original typescript (78 p.). Includes index. Format: Manuscript (On Film) Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1967 on 1 microfilm reel ; 35 mm.

Part of the series: Collections of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania : Gen Re 5

3)
"Genealogy of John Michael Bohner" by Dorothy Rettew Lewis, 1901-.

Maternal ancestry of John Michael Bohner, chiefly paternal ancestry and relatives of his grandmother, Dorothy Rettew Lewis. John Michel Bohner was born at Brooklyn, New York, in 1953, the son of Richard George and Jeanne Estelle Lewis Bohner. His mother, Jeanne Estelle Lewis, was born in 1927 at Washington, D.C., the daughter of Frank Lewis (1900-1949) and Dorothy Rita Rettew Lewis (b. 1901). She married Richard G. Bohner in 1950. They had three sons, 1953-1961, sons, 1953-1961, and a daughter, who died shortly after birth in 1951. Dorothy Rita Rettew was born in 1901 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Gilbert Haven Rettew (1875-1924) and Clara Blanche McDermott.

Ancestors include Aaron Rettew, Sr. (1721-ca. 1792) of Wales and Berks County, Pennsylvania, and James Reid, Sr. (1768-1853) of Newcastle, England, and Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

Copy lacks photographs referred to in text.

Primary Surnames: Rettew, Reid, Lewis

Publication: [United States] : D.R. Lewis, 1967
36 [i.e. 69] leaves : facsims.

(the LDS Catalog series implies that it is on film, but no film number was found)

Do you have any Rettews moving to Montana? I have a J.A. Rettew md to Clarissa Criswell born circa 1861-64 d/o Sherwood [died in Civil War] & Adaline Hutchison Criswell. My notes say J.A. & Clarissa had 5 children - names unknown. I have a letter written by Adaline to her oldest sister Mary Ann Hutchison Jones [my gr gr grmother] while she was staying with the Rettews in Helena, Montana in the 1890's. I would guess the Criswell/Rettew marriage took place in Venango or Butler County as these Hutchisons lived in those counties during this time span.

Unfortunately I have only the sparsest outline of the Rettews, basically names and some dates, but not a lot of details about where they might have relocated to other than Clark Co. Ohio for my direct line. I've kind of neglected this line and was just getting set to get back into it.

As for the Hutchisons, I have Hutchisons from a related line (no direct marriage to Rettews identified, but decendants married later in Ohio. My Hutchisons were in Cumberland Co., PA.

This was actually the first time I'd researched the Rettew connection. Please Email me at mcreatore02@msn.com. I believe your Hutchison line will merge with mine. Another distant cousin and I were in Cumberland Co in Oct. to work on this. She hosted a Hutch. reunion last summer here in Ohio.

I have a copy of the Rettew Gene by Dorothy Rettew Lewis, if anyone wants info or copies of the pictures. The only old pictures are of Rebecca Heck Rettew, Matt and Emma Reid Rettew. I have some of Dorothy and her brothers as children and her parents, if anyone is interested.
