Hello Darius! Sorry it has taken me awhile to get back to you. Lets see. My Great-grandfather was Josef Secunda. I have just found out recently that he changed the spelling. It was Sekunda. He was of Slovak blood. He spoke Slovak fluently and married a Slovak here in the US. Her name was Mary Guzan. He was a Roman Catholic, she was Byzantine Catholic. He immigrated to Butler,Pa, and stayed there and is buried there. He was a blacksmith. He had one sister named Julia Sekunda Gulas. She died young @ age 28 in Pittsburgh in 1919. He had one half brother named John Matochosky (sp?)
I know nothing about the brother. My great grandfather never celebrated his birthday. And he never talked to my grandmother(his eldest daughter) about his birth place, childhood, his parents..Nothing. It is amazing that I know as much as I do, which isn't a lot. His parents I believe were John Sekunda and Luisa Kaniak.(the parents names are unconfirmed) I don't know where they were from except it was in the old Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Hmmm.. I think that is about all of it. You can reach me @ MicheleS100@aol.com.......I am looking forward to hearing from you! ---Michele

Strange, my father's brother was Hermann but he had no children. The name was Sekunda in Germany and other places. Origin in Latvia when under Czarist rule.

My grandfather's name was John Sekonda and I have been told that the spelling was changed from Sekunda. His birth certificate had Cassimir Sekunda listed as his father and Austria as his birthplace. Any other info or websites you would suggest to visit would be appreciated.

Valerie------That is also the same spelling my great grandfather had. You are lucky to have his birth certificate. We don't have any documents on the birthplace of our Sekunda. His marriage certificate said Austria also. He was a Slovak and spoke it fluently. Was your grandfather Slovak? I have went to the church where he used to attend in Pennsylvania looking for info there and haven't been successful. I have tried the place where he used to work and his paperwork has been thrown away. I am now in the process of hiring a genealogist in Slovakia to help me because I believe I have done all the digging I can do here in the states. I have even called up cousins who are in their 70's and 80's asking questions of him and no luck. But, I suggest you do those things that I have done. I would also look on your grandfather's children's baptism certificates, because sometimes they ask the parents where they were born on the older ones. I hope that I have helped you in some way..Feel free to write again....Michele
