Hi Judy and other Shones:

I'm looking for Shones from the Stockport, Nantwitch, Wales areas.
My dad was born in Stockport in 1894 so I'm looking backwards from there.
They were a big family but Shones seem to be very scarce these days.
Hope to hear from someone.
Ann Shone.

I have a feeling that I might be somewhat of a help. My father was Wesley Kenneth Shone. My parents were divorced when I was a child, so I don't have a lot of information, but I do know that his mother, Mollie Sturdivant was married to a Watkin Shone (1847)(from Mould, Wales) Mollie was born in Coos Bay, Oregon in 1874. They were living in Downey, CA and burried in Evergreen Cemetary, L.A.
I don't know a great deal about their history, but would like to learn more. I do have some cousins that would also be interested.

According to the info I have, this may be a different Watkin Shone. The Shones in my family arrived in the US abt 1848 and settled first in Wisconsin. They showed up on the 1850 census. Birth dates and places of children gave clues to when they arrived. The head of the family was Robert Shone,b. abt 1820. The family story is they came from Mold, Wales. His first wife died before leaving Wales and left him with 5 children. Robert remarried and came to America soon after and had 5 more children in the next 6 yrs. The eldest child (of wife #1), Eliza Ann, was my g-g-grandmother. Watkin was the youngest of the 5 children b. abt 1845/6. My records show this Watkin married Katie and had four children, of which one was named Watkin, too. That is all the info I have on the Watkin Shones. I don't know where they settled after Wisconsin but some Shones moved to Minnisota and then eventually to California in early to mid 1860's, probably to escape the war but also because of floods and fires. Some Shones can be found in Sonoma County, California but how they are related I don't know.

Good Morning, California Time....I was going thru what you have written some time ago...some of the dates match, some I just don't know. I do know that "my" Shones, did come to California from Wisconson...there are some up North in Sonoma County. I have a cousin James Shone, that has been up there and has some knowledge of them. I also have a cousin Penny that lives near Chicago and is working on this from that direction.
More later.

Some time ago my cousin Nancy Shone Kelly emailed and asked for info on Watkin Shone. I have recently come across pictures of Watkin Shone, (my g grandfather) and Robert Shone (my gg grandfather). Your reply to Nancy's e-mail was very interesting and I do think we are talking about the same Shones. Our Watkin married Mollie and had four children, the eldest of which was my grandmother Katie. There were no children named Watkin except my great uncle Lloyd who's middle name was Watkin. We also found a picture of Edward Shone who I am pretty sure was Watkin's brother. Watkin was born in 1847 in Wales and died in L.A. in 1912. Anyway, I appreciate the info that you passed on to Nancy. Thank you!
Was Robert's father named Robert also? Penny Benavides
