To Brian Deegan,
my ancestors emigrated to Australia in the mid 1800's, from Dublin. They were mostly butchers. The name was frequently spelled Tankard, Tankrid, back then. The names Peter, Thomas, Patrick , John and Stephen seemed to be used over and over. I have searched a lot of Dublin parish registers and they can be tracked back until the mid 1700's. While the name ids generally reputed to be old german, it is likely that it was introduced into the British Isles during anglo saxon times, as instances can be found in Pembroke as early as 900. In England the name was most nuerous in Yorkshire. It is possible that they moved from there to Ireland, but to have as many as I found in the registers in the mid 1700's they must have been there for a good while, so its unlikely we could ever pinpoint a specific person.
Best wishes,
Pamala Tancred

My father was the son of Thomas Tancred (Buther) and my mother was a Deegan from Ireland. If I can have some more information we may be able to help each other

My great-grandmother was an Elizabeth Tencred (or Tancrad?) born in Ireland about 1851, she was in England by 1871 and married to James Sherman (Sharman?) a Private in Scotch Fusiler Guards. Its a long shot and I have little detail but can you or anyone link to this???

Incidently I seem to remember that Tancred was a Norman knight that invaded Ireland, there's some correction with Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire. If he fathered all the Irish Tancreds I cannot say.

Brian. I have Tancred relatives that emigrated from Ireland to NY between 1840 and 1850. I have observed this Tancred site since 1999 and haven't seen any significant additions made. Some sites have mentioned that there are and were very few Tancreds in Ireland-mostly Dublin and Dublin City so I would assume that my Tancred line also emigrated from that area. Unfortunately of the 1 Tancred family in my line Michael and Rosanna who married in 1864 ,their children -4 girls Catherine b 1870 ( my paternal grandmother),Maryanne b 1865 Rossana b 1868 and Julia b1862 and 1 boy Peter b 1866 there are no living Tancreds. As I search further --who knows there may be a connection. Good Luck

I have been searching for info on my ancestor William Eustace Walsh born circ 1855 Ireland. He worked for a family in Ireland as head groom. He met his wife who came over to Ireland with the family she worked for (as cook), they were (1881 lived Paddington) Thomas S Tancred (Baron) (born Northumberland) 40yrs and Mary H 35yrs born Ireland. I believe the wife to be Mary Harriett Hemans born 1846 Dublin.

Surnames: Tancred Tankard Winter
To Pamela Tancred
Interesting to note that they were mainly butchers. I visited Bourke which is NW New South Wales, Australia, last year & there the Tancred or Tankard name is well known for the large meatworks they had in that district.
My g-g-grandmother was Honora Tancred, born 1818?, Ireland, came to Australia & married Edward Winter in Sydney, 1840. Honora came to Aust with her brother, Richard? & wife Terzah Delmage. They lived in the Keilor district of Victoria. Any connection? or any other info?
All the best,
Gay-Lea
