I am searching for descendants of Peter Van Allen and Maria Ellwood. Peter Van Allen was born about 1745 and baptised at Fort Hunter, Queen Anne's Chapel, son of Jacob Van Alen and Rachel Quackenbush. He lived at Schenectady, NY for some time. My gggg grandfather, Jacobus Van Allen, was baptised in 1771 at the Lutheran Trinity Church of Stone Arabia. Jacobus later married Catherine Timmerman and settled in Manheim, NY. Eager to share information. Please e-mail.

I am interested in your Van Allen family, many of whom in NY are related to the early Van Allen/Van Halen family of New Netherlands. I have information on these earlier folks and am interested if you know your connection, if any, to them. Am willing to share what I have.

I don't see people I recognize right away. You earliest generations, where did they live? I still haven't found my copy of the article in the NYGBR which discusses the origins of the American Van Alen/Van Allen family from the Van Halen family in the Netherlands. It was part of the series "An Armory of Families of Dutch descent, seems to have been put out in the 1930's. I think it is entirely possible that you are descended from this family, so please keep in touch. I haven't done a great deal of Van Allen research yet, my Marytje Van Allen was from New Jersey. Contact me at fmsomogyi@usroute66.net to keep in touch, or to fill me in on where your family first settled.

Pam, there was an article on the Van Halen/Van Allen family you should see in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, in the series of articles on "An Armoury of New York families of Dutch Descent". I cannot lay my hands on my copy right this minute, but you could probably find the article in the 1930's, or on Persis. My ancestry goes:
1. Marytje Van Allen m.1732Hackensack, NJ, Johannes Ridnars, son of Abel Reddenhars and Catryna Jans Van Blerkum.
2.Pieter Gerrits Van Allen m. 1706 Hackensack NJ Trinitie Hendrickse Hoppe. He was b. in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
3.Gerrit Jansz Van Allen m. Geertruid Hoogendyck in the Netherlands, 1658
4. Jan Van Halen m. 1630 Madeleentje Wttenbogaert at Utrecht, the Netherlands
5. Adam Peterszen Van Halen b. ca 1555, m. Elisabeth Jansdr. Verheul. He d. 1642 Utrecht, Netherlands

Thanks for the info, Mary.
I would sure like to get my hands on that article. I have copies of part of "The Van Alen Family in America". I mainly have the parts dealing with the Albany branch. I have entered all of the names in my database and would like to add as much as possible so that it would be easier for everyone to make their connections. Sounds like a big job, huh? I think if several of us work together it would be possible.
Do you know how I might order the article?
Thanks, Pam

Pam, I just went to a very good library to find the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society quarterlies. Locally here in St. Louis they are located in the major urban libraries, like central libraries, and in university libraries. It is a very well respected journal. Lacking such a facility, I would next try to see if they have a website; hoping they would have an index to past issues would be too much to hope for, but you could ask if they mail out copies of past articles. Each year is indexed in the hard copies, so it wouldn't be too hard to go through 10 1930's issues to find which one had numerous Van Allens and Van Halens in the index. I am not going to our library for a while, but if I ever find it again (this place is the typical genealogical nightmare: boxes of stuff all over the house) I'll be sure to contact you.

Thanks Mary! I will see what I can dig up. I don't have access to a good library. That makes things a little difficult. But, atleast I know the name of the article to search.
In the meantime, I will welcome any Van Allen information from anyone to add to my data base.
Keep in touch,
Pam
