My grandfather's last name was Vercoe but his dad was killed in a farming accident when he was very young. His mother remarried and he took the new name of Lyon. Do you know much of Fred's family? I do not know my grandfather's first name at this time.

Heidi, I have been remiss in not answering. I actually have quite a lot of information on the Vercoes. Fred was married to my great aunt. They all lived in Columbus, OH. I have to do some digging around, because the Vercoes were a side issue. I believe there were two brothers who came from Wales. They appear to have been quite successful in Columbus. Where it breaks down is coming down this way. I contacted the only two from my line and never heard back. I will do the digging and get back to you.

Thanks Barbara, I wish I knew more about my great grandfathers side of the family. All I know is he died when my grandfather was very little and then took his new fathers last name. It was later in life when my grandfather went to join the military they told him he did not exist with that name at that his real last name was not Lyon but rather Vercoe. He had no idea... appreciate any information. Thanks again Barbara! But I do know they were living in Washington at the time of my grandfathers birth. If James Vercoes family came from Columbus there must be some connection...

Heidi, John T. and I worked on the 1880 census and found the 2 Vercoe families living in Columbus OH. It looks like there are two families, two brothers who came from Cornwall, England in the early 1870s. I'm going to try to look at the specific entries this afternoon.
There is another group of Vercoes in the Chicago area which should be looked at too.

Oh, thank you for replying! I think it is wonderful that you are keeping me informed. I am having a hard time tracking my grandfathers family since I do not know where his family is from nor do I have their names, other than James. Thanks for the update!!!!!

Heidi, The 1880 census was very helpful. Here is the data.
John C. Vercow 57 - stone mason
Jemima wife 52 (both born in England)
John N. 24 (England)
Mary E. 18 (England)

George Vercoes 38 also a stone mason England
Mary wfe 38 England
Emma 14, Bessie 12 England
Flora 8 Ohio, Frederick 3 Ohio, Charles H. 3/12

Both families are in Columbus. Frederick is my line. Someone to pursue is Charles H.

Also there is a Vercoe family in Chicago, Cook County
John 32 England
Ella 30 Wisconsin
Nellie 5 Frederick 3
Mary 67 England mother
There is another child listed but I couldn't make out the name or age.

You need to come up with a guess as to the age of your father. I need to look at the 1900 census, but I need more specific data which I can get from the directory, about what precinct they lived in. Otherwise there are reams of pages to have to scan and that hurts the eyes.

Barbara, What awesome knowledge! Good stuff there!! Actually it is my Great Grandfather that was the Vercoe. So let's see, My grandfather was born around 1909 in Bellingham Washington, it was his father that was James E. Vercoe. I do not remember where exactly the family came from before coming to Washington, I know it was back east somehwere. So that would make him born anywhere from 1890 and back. I wonder if that helps?? Congrats on the great find! I will print it out and use it for reference! I love it!!! Thanks you! Heidi
