I have just learned today that my great-great grandmother was Harriet Whittall from Farnworth, Lancashire, England. She married James Cooper and had a son named Joseph Cooper in 1887. Any chance that you may be able to help me with some Whittall genealogy?

We are also trying to close some loops on Whittalls from the Dudley area. They seem to have been a tight family unit. If interested contact me on and I will put you onto our most knowledgable Whittall researcher, Victor Whittall.

Thank you Jack, but I already have that page. I am currently searching one generation further back.

I have learned from the Harriett Whittall's marriage certificate, that her father's name was Joseph Whittall. His occupation is listed as Overlooker, and so I assume that he must have been a supervisor in one of the factories. Probably a cotton mill.

My great-grandfather was not listed in the 1881 census, since he was not born yet, but that is defintely the right family.

Do you have a lot of information on Whittall's?

My family are from Bury, Lancashire which is a cock's stride (as we say in Lancashire) from Farnworth.

I've never looked into our family tree and my Dad assures me we have no relatives in Farnworth but I'll ask other relatives to see if they know any more.

As you probably know Whittall's not really a common name and there aren't too many in these parts.
