This echoes a message I have placed on the NZ noticeboard. I am seeking information on the first wife (Valerie) of my father-in-law (Harold Wyndham Cottle aka Arthur Harold Russell), and in particular the children of that marriage (Noel b. 1916? and Rupert b. 1918 Melbourne). My husband is a late-in-life child of Arthur Harold Russell's 3rd marriage in 1947. Valerie married in Sydney in 1914 as Valerie Collins, vocalist, age 23, born Dargaville NZ. father Alfred Collins (insurance inspector) and Florence McKegany. Harold Wyndham Cottle aka Arthur Harold Russell is also NZ-born (1887). His father is Morford Cottle and mother Eleanor Lomax. He lived and worked as an accountant at various times between about 1914 till the early 1960s in Victoria, Qld and NSW and for a period in his earlier life worked in what was then known as Malaya and possibly Fiji.

Hi my name is melinda cottle ,I,m from gisborne nz .My dads name is rodger cottle his dad was noel harold cottle originaly from sydney australia. We dont know alot about my grand fathers past only that his dad was harold cottle & his wife was valerie collins my dad only knows she was a sorprano singer & harold was a govt auditor in sydney they had 2 boys my grandad noel & his brother norman. My dad says that he thinks his father noel was known as rupert for a nick name. The boys were brought up in neutral bay ,sydney until the age of 13 / 14 , But valerie had passed away & harold left the boys for another women i think , Thats why my grandfather noel was such a hard man he never would talk about his childhod. The boys were sent to gisborne nz to stay with there grandparents, My grandad noel then went to a catholic school dad thinks Campion or old boys til the age of 15/16 then he went to sacred heart college he was a very good sportsman in handball, cricket etc.He finally moved to a little country town up the coast in nz called tolaga bay & met Te raukura alias Lovey Noanoa & married had 3 kids my dad rodger , raymond & valerie . I hope this means somthing to you ,I,d love to be able to find out more for my dad if we are both talking about the same people, My mum started to look into the cottle family tree but we,ve lost here since & cant find the paper work. My grandfather Noel passed away going on 4yrs ago now he was 91,

Thank you so much for your response, Melinda. After recently finding your grandfather's obituary, and then happening to chance upon Simon Cottle's 2005 genealogy query about Harold Cottle, I got very excited & tried to track your family down. (You might possibly have heard along the grapevine?) So, believe it or not, I have been trying just this past couple of weeks to draft a letter about all this complex & difficult subject, to send to your Dad, Rodger, whose address I now have. Would the family be happy for me to do that? I feel it is too much & too private to exchange on a public forum.

We are indeed talking about the same man. I have various marriage & birth certificates which show quite clearly the gradual name & identity transition from Harold Wyndham Cottle to Arthur Harold Russell (happily he kept the same birthdate, mother's name & father's [unusual] first name, though changed other details). Plus we recently got some NSW government archival photo/medical info about Harold Wyndham Cottle age 20 which establishes quite conclusively that he is the same person who we knew as Arthur Harold Russell. (He had a very distinctive wound from a lung operation.)

My husband, Ian (born 1950!) has the same father as your grandfather Noel (born 1916?) - technically that makes them half-brothers, and makes Ian an uncle to Rodger (even though Rodger might be a bit older???) BTW, Ian also has a 3 years younger sister. As far as we know, there were no other children (eg. with the lady he married between Valerie & Ian's Mum).

That said, we don't know a lot about Harold Cottle's early life - only snippets of stories from his childhood, and his various travels with his work; and some background on his Cottle family (which he didn't provide but which we've found out since).

Since we found out about Noel & Rupert/Norman back in 2002, we've been very concerned to find out whatever happened to them, and are sad to hear that your grandfather had such a hard time after his father disappeared from the scene.

I look forward to hearing back from you.
kindest regards
Diane

Thanks Melinda - shall try to call you one evening later in the week. And shall try to get the letter for Rodger I've been trying to draft, finalised & mailed off.

The person who you think of as Harold Cottle, and who is such a shadowy person from back in the far distant past of your grandfather's painful memory, was someone who we knew, well, as Arthur Harold Russell (commonly referred to as "Rus"). Though, that said, Rus was already in his 60s when he married Ian's Mum, who was only in her late 20s. So there is much we don't know about him as it seems he took many secrets to his grave, which we're only now trying to unravel, so that my husband Ian can have a better understanding of the man who was his Dad. Rus died in Goulburn NSW (where Ian's Mum lived & had a medical practice)in 1984, only a few months before his 97th birthday.
Look forward to chatting about all this.
Till then ...
warmest
Diane

Hi there I might be clutching at straws? but here goes I think the Norman Cottle you speak of was my Dad? My Mum's name was Ellen & she met Norman in Auckland & had me in 1955. My second name is Valerie & I recall my Mum saying that it was my Grandmother's name on my father's side. Unfortunately I never met him but he is named on my birth certificate.
In my early twenties I tracked down whom I believe was a cousin possibly and we spoke on the phone? He was in Tolaga Bay & worked in the Post Office. He sadly told me my father Norman had died 6 weeks before my call & confirmed I was named after his Mum. Valerie. We had planned to
catch up & meet sometime later but unfortunately I believe he died of possibly a brain tumour but I am not certain??
Does any of this ring true for you.. I would so love to know!!!!!
