I believe you're looking for the Mississippi Children's Home Service (www.mchscares.org).

As far as I know, the 1923 special census of dependent children did not take the names of the children, just statistics. It lists three institutions in Jackson, MS that provided residential care for children :

1) Mississippi Orphans' Home, no address. Under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Home later known as Methodist Children's Home.

2) Mississippi Baptist Orphanage, no address. Under the auspices of the Baptist State Convention. Perhaps akin to the Baptist Children's Village, listed in 1978.

3) Mississippi Children's Home Society, no address, has 805 children under care---I am not sure if there was a mention of congregate care in an institution as opposed to foster homes.

My mother and 4 of her siblings lived in the "Mississippi Baptist Orphanage" in Jackson Mississippi between about 1907 til around 1917. Mother passed away 2 years ago at age 98. She told us many stories about living in the orphanage and I have an article that was in "The Baptist Record" Newspapter dated Feb 24, 1977. The name of the institution was changed to the "Baptist Children's Village" in Feb. 1961. I hope you were able to get the information you needed. If you have any interesting anecdotes about life in the "Home" (as my mother and her siblings referred to it), I would love to hear them. Thank you....Arrie Dollard

The Mississippi Baptist Orphanage has been known for many years now as the Baptist Children's Village and its primary campus, the Inda Nunnery Campus, has the address of P. O. Box 27, Clinton, MS. It's in the Jackson, MS, telephone book. The original campus was demolished to make way for what was in the 1960's the Jackson Mall and a new campus was built on the western edge of Jackson. The other principal orphanage in Jackson in early years was the Methodist Orphanage which was near Millsaps College.

Was so glad to see your posts. My mom was adopted out of the orphanage in 1927. She found out it was burned and never pursued finding any of her family. Does anyone know if there are records anywhere dating back that far?

Hi read your post and I bet your mom may of know my grandmother and her sister who were there in 1910 (at least) as per the census. My grandmother was Jane E. (Janie) and her sis was Mary L. COX. Jane was 2 years older than Mary. Jane born in 1892 and Mary in 1894. maybe in the stories your mom told of "home" hope maybe she might of mentioned some of the girls she knew.

Thank you
