Surnames: O'ROURKE
My husband was placed in a children's home in Providence RI for parts of 1948 and 1949. It was in the Mt. Pleasant area of Providence and within walking distance of Mt. Pleasant HS. His memory tells him it was made up of a series of group home. It had accommodations for both males and females. At the time he was there it was called the Patrick I. O'Rourke Childrens Home. It was operated by the State of Rhode Island.

He would like to find out approximately where it was, if possible. If you have any information please send me email at pjwenzel@uiuc.edu

Hello Patricia,
My Mother was also there at the same time as your husband. It is now Rhode Island College Campus. Only a few of the buildings remain. There is now a project underway to get together residents and staff to record their storys and historys so that they are preserved. If you would like more info on this please reply to this message board.

Thanks, Denise. We heard about this project and visited the campus this summer. It's quite a project and my husband is glad to be involved.

I'm going to respond to you offline on the off chance that your mother may know my husband's sisters who may also have been there.

Patricia

You might try contacting Rhode Island College. They had a project involving the home and may be able to help. Try this URL:

Hello Kevin,

I think that you are talking about my Uncle George. Both he and my Mom where at the State Home in the late 40's.
The first response that you received is correct about getting info on the State Home and School / Patrick O'Rourke Children's Home at the website that they mentioned. It is a very good site with a lot of info about the project and past residents and staff. There is also contact info in case you are interested in participating in the project or just need info.
I will contact my Uncle and let him know that you are looking for him. I assume that he will be willing to contact you. For now I will act as a go between since he is not online. Please let me know if this arrangement is to your liking.

Eagerly awaiting your response.
Denise

How nice of you to reply.
I wonder if we might have met?
I'm a good friend of George and as you might know his father
passed away recently. Some of his friends took up a collection and wanted to donate the $ to George's orphanage.
Thanks for concern and if you want to email me direct.
I'm at kwincamb@earthlink.net
Thanks again

Kevin,
I have contacted my Uncle and he can't place you. I just want to clarify how and when you knew my Uncle. Also how did you find out that my Grandfather has passed away? As I have stated my Uncle is not online so I will have to be the go between. I am hoping that whatever info you give me might jar my Uncle's memory.
Thank you.
Denise
