We are a Baulk family who live in Cambs,my husband is also interested in the family tree,he reckons that his family does have a connection with Guilden Morden certainly up to about 1960..but he doesnt know anything as far back as 1757.Tales from old-were years ago when my husbands father took his mother back to GM to see her cousin..(cousins name was Fred Clements)Fred lived with his daughter and they had adjoining cottages there..Some years ago my husband met a chap dredging the river at Huntingdon his name was Derek Baulk--(from the Bedfordshire site of the family).and he mentioned that he remembered an old aunt from GM who was a Baulk.
Cant help apart from the fact that other Baulks came from Shippea Hill and a Caleb Baulk came from Ashwell near you.

Thanks for your message. I imagine it could be possible your husbands Grandmother was linked to Sarah Clements who married William Baulk 14-7- 1868 at Steeple Morden. Their family were : Thomas 1869 at Ashwell
Priscilla 1870
Selina 1873 at Meldreth
Samuel 1875 at Meldreth
Alice 1877 at Meldreth
Benjamin 1879 at Ashwell
Joseph 1881 at Ashwell
I'm not sure whether Aswell and Meldreth are the same place.

Further back I have note of a Sarah Baulk who married a John Clements 11-10-1772 at Aspeden.

My family were at Guilden Morden/Abington Piggotts until between 1881 and 1891 when my 3x gt Grandparents Henry Baulk and Elizabeth (nee Davies) died although there were 2 Baulk families living at Abington Piggotts on the 1891 census. Samuel and Susan Baulk who I can identify as a Nephew of Henry Baulk and Wilfred Baulk son of Samuel and his family. Both Samuel and Wilfred were born in Abington Piggotts.
I have never succeeded in finding a baptism for Henry Baulk 1804/5 but having discovered a 3rd cousin who had come to the same conclusion as me that he was the son of Samuel Baulk and Flower Baker. He fits in well with their family and he called 2 of his children Samuel and Flower!
My 2xgt Grandfather David Baulk moved with his family to Watton On Stone in Herts and his brother Samuel also my 2xgt Grandfather moved to Dartford in Kent. My Gt Grandparents were cousins!

I have massed quite a lot of information about the Baulks in several parishes in that area so if you are able to research back a couple of generations we may be able to piece together some of the families. I have a complete copy of the Dunton parish records ( there were some Baulks there - but not directly mine!) which I could look in if you thought that was appropriate. Do keep in touch!

Thank you very much for your message - there is a lot of information there. Ashwell and Meldreth are not the same place, they are about 15 miles apart. Meldreth is in Cambridgeshire, a few miles north of Royston and Ashwell is just in Hertfordshire a few miles west of Royston. Ashwell station is actually in Cambs and the next villages north are Steeple Morden and Guilden Morden. You mentioned Dunton parish records - is that Dunton near Biggleswade in Bedfordshire?
I do not have any records, I am just going on my memory and knowledge of the family history. How do you fit into the Baulk family?
The list of those born at Meldreth and Ashwell includes a Samuel born in 1875 - I thought that my grandfathers fathers name was Sam but I think the date is wrong for that.I thought that both my grandparents were born in about 1884 - 85. I don't know of any connection with Abington Piggotts. Most of grandfathers family seem to have come from villages close to Ely.

I've come across your message on the 'Baulk' message board and thought you might be interested in the following.
My Father Wiliam Joseph Baulk was born 4th June 1907. He had 2 Brothers and 4 Sisters. George, Horace, Anne, Glady's, Elsie, Violet.
I'm trying to find out for definate but we think he did have links with Ashwell (mentioned in your posting) He lived in St. Albans until 1952 and in his youth used to Bike to Ashwell, we think, to see his Grandad. My Fathers Cousin owned the Sand and Gravel Co. at Shenly near St. Albans.
Myself and my son especially (Geoff b.1980) is particualarly interested in tracing our 'roots' and so we would appreciate any info you may have.
If anyone whishes to contact me you can reach me at the following address. david.baulk@tesco.net.
Cheers
David

For anyone who is interested I've just found that Samuel Baulk and Susan Baulk lived at Shippea Hill Farm, Prickwillow, Ely. They had a son by the name of James Baulk who was a Private in the 2nd Battalion the Suffolk Regt. James was killed on the 15th June 1918 aged 23. He is remembered at Chocques Military Cemetary, Pas de Calais, France. Chocques is 4km north-west of Bethune.

Thank you for your message. Do you have any idea of the names of the parents of William Joseph Baulk? I have quite a lot of data on the Baulks but mainly in the 1800s.

Jenny,

I've sent you an e-mail with reference to your query.. did you get it? If not here it is below,

My Grandad, William Joseph Baulk was born in Slough, His Parents were Joseph and Annie. Joseph died 18th November 1950 aged 69 which would mean he was born in 1881 matching the date you have. I believe Joe was born in a Pub in Ashwell. My Grandad, William, was born at home in Slough to Annie Elizabeth Baulk (nee Symonds) Annie was born 28th October 1883 in London and Died 23rd July 1969 in Newport Pagnall (Residing in Bletchley)

Are you related to the Baulk Family....

Hi Geoff, I am definately related to the Baulks! My Mum was Marian Baulk and we descend from Henry and Elizabeth Baulk of Guilden Morden / Abington Piggots in Cambs. It would seem that you descend from William Baulk and Sarah Clements of Ashwell as the dates fit. It would need some more investigation but it could be that you descend from William Baulk and Martha Pepper. Their son William was born at Abington Piggots 6 May 1848 ( IGI). This may be Joseph's father. That William could be one of two! I have a William Baulk bap 2 Dec 1821 at Guilden Morden son of William (brother of my 5xgt grandfather Henry)Baulk and Alice ( Hollingsworth) and a William Baulk baptised at Guilden Morden 18 Feb 1825 son of Henry and Elizabeth - my 5x gt Grandparents. If you manage to link in with this branch I would be happy to send you information of our branch.

Hello Jenny,

I've done my maths following your message and have worked out that if William b1821 is my relation then he would have been 60 at the time of Joseph's Birth, if it was the William b1825 then he would have been 56, finally if it was William b1848 (who married Sarah Clements 1868) then he would have been 33 at the time of Joe's birth. Do you think this would make him the most likely of all the William's to be Joe's Father?

Would you have any suggestions as to where I could go to get this confirmed. Would it be the PRO in Kew?

Many thanks for your info, it's grately appreciated.

Yours
Geoff
