Gassen: Prussia > Wisconsin (or Mich. Territory)

In an attempt to knock an informational chink into my current brick wall of research I'm posting this data on Gassen's in Wisconsin (territory or state): showing up as early as 1846, but listed in the 1850 census (apparently) as a family of young adults sans parents. Also listed consistently in census data as being from Prussia with one child listed as born in "Michigan" approx. 1846.

Any interested takers of this info, please respond!

Thanks.

Don't know if I can help, but here goes. My GGGrandfather is Anton (Anthony) Gassen. He came to US in 1857 and appears in 1860 US census, town of Springdale, Dane cty, WI with his father-in-law Herman Moll listed as head of household. If you are interested in further communication please email me at dnsrg@pocketmail.com

Don,

Thanks for your follow-up posting. This Gassen family branch of my research is a challenge. I've listed my updated tree (best viewed cut-and-pasted into a word processing document) below. The chronology of records on this Gassen line starts with their New York arrival in 1842, then Oak Creek and Town of Lake (both Milwaukee County) as early as 1846, leaving some young adults in those areas with the patriarch moving westward to Iowa County, Wisconsin, which split up as it grew, and other records then are based in Grant and Richland County. There is an Anthony listed. Please feel free to email me to get into details of the info. I've mentioned here.

The results of my own search of Gassens may or may not help. I have located several families in the 1910 missouri census for Lafayette County.

The line I'm researching was headed by a Heinrich Tilmann Gassen, and emigrated from Köln area to Wisconsin in a couple of groups from 1842 through about 1845; part of the family staying in the Milwaukee County area (Towns of Oak Creek and Lake) and another part moving to the west side of the state to Grant, Iowa, and Richland Counties by 1860.

I have some hints of connections to Iowa, but also the birth of a [Gassen & Dederichs] in Detroit c. 1843.

I've been in touch with other Gassen researchers who are part of the Missouri branch. There is a possible connection there with an 1860 emigration to the Verona Twp., Dane County, Wis. area by a Herman Gassen.

Happy to correspond further via email with details of the outlined info above.

Thank you for responding so quickly! I am searching for my maternal grandmother, Emma Gassen. I believe she was adopted by the Herbert Gassen family sometime before the 1900 census. She was born in New York city about 1892. If you have any information that might further my search, I'd really appreciate. I think she was an orphan train rider. (I'm just beginning my research so I need all the help I can get!:)

I believe my ggggrandfather was Herbert or Herlbert and lived in Wisconsin or Minnesota. He moved to Lexington County Missouri in early 1900's. Contact me if you think this is of any help or if you can verify.
