John Jane Sokolik were my grandparents. What would you like to know about them? I don't know a lot, but I know lots of people who do.

I was wondering who John's parents were. My fahter is James Otto Sokolik. I was able to get back to 1675 on Jane. I know that my father said that he has a cousin named Maggie so I assume that you are her. I have searched for well over a year and I am at a stand still with John, if you have any information I would appreciate it. Thanks

Hi Jan, Yes--your father is my cousin, though we haven't seen each other for a long time. If you want to contact me off list, you can write to: sokolik@socrates.berkeley.edu. Tell him hi (I remember you and your sister, though clearly I haven't seen you in a long time, either.)

I have just the names of the grandparents, James and Teresa (thus the name of your father and paternal grandfather). James was from Prague, I assume Teresa was, too, though I don't know that for a fact. I can't find her maiden name, though some asking around might turn it up.

Your father has another cousin, Leslie, who is in Utah and is interested in family genealogy. He may know more details about this. I'm not sure how to get in touch w/ him, though.

Seen your message on Sokolik message board. My grandfather (Step) was Otto Joseph Sokolik, born 1892, in Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan. Son of James Vancil Sokolik born 1848, and Marie Theresa Halik 1846 both in Prague, Austria Hungary. Their other childrens names were: John, Emma and Sible. Does this ring a bell with you?

Hi Barbara,

My great grandmother was Sible Sokolik. She was married to Lee Kirkland, and had three children, Sandy Kirkland (now deceased), Ray Kirkland (Westport, Wa), and my grandmother Harriet Watkins (Spokane,Wa). My grandmother told me a story about her cousin, Charles Sokolik, who was enlisted in the armed services, and was in the Prague area. He asked around, and found alot of his family living in the back of the post office. He wrote to one of the daughters over there for years, but then received a letter back from one of her sister's stating that she had been taken away due to the letter writing to him (fear of communismn). There was also two other children in the family besides John, Emma, and Sible, and that was Otto and Charlies. My grandmother has found other relatives with lots of information on the family, and would love to give you any information you would like. Please feel free to e-mail me and I will pass it on to her. My e-mail is ModMouse77@aol.com.
