Enhanced Viewer Save doesn't work on my Vista in IE7 or IE8

Cannot save images to my computer with the enhanced viewer. I have vista home premium. I receive the message "You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in the picture folders instead?" I have had this problem in Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8. It is too time consuming to save images somewhere other than my second hard (D:) drive and move them to where I would like them filed. The solution that I don't like is to add content.ancestry.com, search.ancestry.com, and www.ancestry.com to my list of trusted sites in IE. However, trusted sites are intented for https (secure) vice http sites. I belive that there is some security feature of Vista that is preventing the enhanced viewer that is provided by Ancestry.com from saving locally on my system. Has anyone else had this problem or have any advice?

Thanks for the reply. I should add that I'm logged onto my system using and administrator account when I'm on ancestry.com. I looked at security permissions at the folder (and its parent folder where it inherits permissions) where I want to save and see no reason why I as the user cannot save to the hard drive. I tried giving modify permissions to INTERACTIVE, LOCAL SERVICE, and a few others to see if I could somehow trigger acceptance for my system to allow the Enhanced Viewer to save to my drive with no luck.

I also note that when I add the three sites cited earlier into my trusted center, that protected mode while I'm on ancestry.com is off. I didn't try to decipher if all three entries are required in the trusted center.

One other tidbit. I noticed that after putting several of the ancestry sites in my trusted center the user interface (web page layour) for ancestry.com changes drastically. It isn't necessarily bad, but I wonder if somehow I'd be missing out on some content on my searches.

Hi Anne

Has anyone come up with a solution to this yet? It seems to have been going on for months. I have recently upgraded to IE8 and since doing so cannot save census images to my hard drive and cannot print any of the census images - I can print the webpage but not the actual census image, it just comes up with the Ancestry error mssage "An error occurred duing this operation".

Thanks

This is a bug in IE8 that Ancestry.com has not yet compensated for. If your ISP is AOL, microsoft has thrown up its hands and recommends uninstalling IE8. This unfortunately must be done with a great deal of caution.

If you go back to IE7, and it still does not work, it is quite likely that Vista's security settings are the culprit. Search this topic and the "improvements" message board for a post on how to adjust the security settings - sorry I can't tell you myself since I am not a Vista victim. The helpful user post was within the last month or six weeks.

Good luck,
Jade

My solution (in April) was to switch to Mozilla Firefox. I've not had any save problems since.

I started this thread a while back but quickly realized that no solution was forthcoming in the short-term. My solution was to download and install Mozilla Firefox for web browsing. It has no problems downloading pictures from Ancestry.com. You can decide if you want to make it your default browser. My reading and discussions with others is that Firefox is less vulnerable to intrusions that could infect your system. Except for a site or two I've switched to Firefox for my internet browsing. Make sure your system has sufficient space before installing the software. I started at www.firefox.com when I installed the software. Good luck.

I got a message asking me to install a new version of the viewer after upgrading to IE8. I didn't do so immediately and then found I couldn't print or save. I tried to install the new version but it said I had to uninstall the old one first. The uninstall failed and now I cannot install the viewer or print or save ancestry document images from ANY web browser. This kind of defeats the object of having a subscription... I am a tad annoyed and would welcome any advice. Incidentally I also cannot print ordinary ancestry webpages (not document images) from Firefox as they all have a blank part in the middle (on the print, not on the screen). This only happens with Ancestry pages, not any other webpages nor any other prints. I can print them from IE, but am not using IE regularly right now as it keeps crashing. I have Windows Vista. Aaaaaaaaaaaagggghhhhh!!

I received this reply from Ancestry Technical Support:

"At this time Internet Explorer 8 is not supported. Since it is a new product, we have not been able to fully test it with Ancestry.com yet. We have found that Internet Explorer 8 works better when running in compatibility mode. To run in compatibility mode, click on the compatibility icon located next to the web address bar. This icon looks like a piece of paper torn in half. For printing issues, you can try turning off Protected Mode in IE8. Click Tools> Internet Options> Security> Trusted Sites> Then UNCHECK the Enable Protected Mode option. If this does not resolve your issue, we recommend that you go back to using Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 3."

None of these suggestions work - just glad I have access to another machine with Internet Explorer 7 and Windows XP !
