May family in Armagh

I am trying to trace what may be my family in Ireland - I think my gt Granddad was William May - born in 1837 in Armagh - was in Liverpool as a Carter in 1891 with a family. I think my Granddad was the product of a second marriage but am not sure. Does anyone know of the May family in Armagh or County Monaghan please?

Thanks

Anne

William’s birth was long before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1864) so you won’t find a birth certificate for him. You might find a baptism if the records have survived, and you can locate his exact religion and parish or townland. Looking at Griffiths Valuation, there are about 20 May entries for Co Armagh but only one for Co Monaghan (in 1860), so obviously Armagh seems more likely to be his county of origin.

I would try to find William’s marriage cert in England. From that you should get his father’s name, which I would then search against Griffiths. If you find a possible match then that could form the basis for a search of parish records to lcate his birth and that of any siblings.

Irish censuses pre 1901 have been destroyed so you won’t be able to find his family through that route.

Many thanks for your help = I will get the marriage cert and go from there - as I say I only Think this is my Gt Granddad as my Granddad ran away from home at 13 and I'm not 100% sure that this is real name.

Kind regards
Anne

Thank you - this is who is possibly my Gt Granddad - Margaret died in 1883 and he quickly remarried Mary Martin and I think Granddad is the product of this marriage but I still can't find him,,
all I know is that his parents died when he was 13 and his siblings argued about who would have him so he ran away. If he was the son of a 2nd marriage that took place quickly after their Mother died then they would obviously hold some resentment to him.
Granddad said 1 or 2 were emigrating and i know that at least 1 of William's children emigrated between 1897 and 1901 so it fits with what Granddad told us.

So it is all circumstantial at the moment - thanks anyway

Anne

Castleblaney is in County Monaghan, the next county over from Armagh. I think it's about 20 or so miles south of Portadown. Elizabeth May's parents were named Peter and Sarah, born late 1700s. Elizabeth was born in 1807. She only had one brother who's name was john. The family moved to Canada, outside Toronto, in the late 1820s. I have not come across William Harry May in my research. If I do, I will contact you.

I have come across a May with your grandrather's first name who was born in N. Ireland and migrated to Liverpool, Ohio. The years seem to be close to what you described.
