Can anyone tell me if there is a way to find out if there was a John Vaughn and a Thomas Vaughn (I believe they were brothers) in the Letcher County area before 1819. I am trying to find out where John Vaughn was before he showed up in Harlan County in 1829 with a 100 acre land grant. He doesn't appear in the census or tax lists of Harlan or Knox Counties before that date. He and Thomas were in Lincoln County in 1790 and 1800 before many of the states were formed. He died shortly after receiving the land grant. His wife, Martha, was head of household in 1840 Harlan census. She apparently sold the land after he died and moved to Lee Co., Va where she appeared in the 1850 census living in the household of Martha and William Kybert (Kibert).
