Recently I have been trying to research my grandson's paternal family. I found where name changes to Schmidt in 1880's in Michigan with George Schmidt. German records indicate and corrolate with the 1880 census Georg Konrad Schmid and wife Elisabethe Barbara Wannenwetsch. Living in Eaton County Mi in 1880 as George and Barbara Schmidt.

I have done some tracing back and come up with surnames Reihm, Keinath, Kraemer, Bantel, Gumpper, Raiser,Binder,Klett, Huber, Streicher, Ruoffand Ackerknecht.

Can anyone connect to these surnames and the Schmid to Schmidt in Michigan, Eaton County to St. Clair County Michigan??????????

Hopefully am not chasing my tail LOL

Happy hunting all, and any help would be very appreciated, although my grandson is only 1 year old he will appreciate his Oma doing this someday.

Thanks much,

Angi Gross Hawkins

I have some early MI Schmid info. Seems a Lutheran minister named Schmid preached between Detroit and Ann Arbor. His letter home to relatives enticed many to follow him to the US.

When Johann Schairer and Bertha had children, they had Ella (1888-1964) Helena I. "Lena" (1889-1995), Louisa (1891-1970) and Aaron (1895-1952). Louisa had 4 children Hilda, Raymond G., Elmer C. (1921-2010) and Carl E. Von Hofe. Carl E. Von Hofe is my grandfather. My grandparents Carl and Neva Von Hofe took care of my aunt Lena for a little bit of time. I remember my aunt Lena very well. I wondered if you knew any of the Von Hofe family. God Bless

I might be able to help. But this to could be a long shot. You mentioned the name Klett with Schmidt. My Husbands great great grandmother wad Ada Schmidt Klett. Ada married Frederick Klett. Ada was born Mar 1879 in New Canaan CT. Ada's father was Charles Schmidt born on Oct 1849 in Prussia Germany and died in New Canaan CT. There is a picture of the grave stone on my tree. Charles Schmidt married Rachel Saunders. They had 6 children Ada, Annie, Karl, Robert,Oskar and William. Oskar and William are both buried in New Canaan CT. The name Saunders goes very far back in the late 1600's in Pound Ridge New York. I don't know who Charles Family was or any siblings. Let me know if this helps at all.

Hello Brett and Angi,

I recently purchased an antique wooden trunk from a Lansing area antique shop. What makes this trunk unique is how clearly the trunk’s original owner (“Joh: Georg Schmidt”) and original purpose (“Auswanderungs Gut” or “emigration good/property” in German) are scrawled on the face and lid of the trunk. Such trunks were widely used to store emigrant’s personal belongings on sea voyages from their native countries to the United States. For some time, this particular trunk had been owned by a Lansing, MI family unrelated to the trunk’s original owner.

In short, the piece is a real heirloom. If you or your family have an immigrant ancestor to whom this trunk may have belonged, please let me know. I intend to sell the trunk, but am a family historian myself and would like to connect with a potential descendant, if possible. For more information, pictures, etc. please contact me directly at justinrfast(at)gmail.com.

Thank you!
Justin

Exterior Description:

The trunk measures 33.6” x 18.25” x 15.75” at the lid’s peak. It boasts original black outer finish, metal strapping, edging, and handles. It is very worn, but in original condition.

Painted in an ornate script on the front face of the trunk is:

Joh: Georg
Schmidt

On the lid is painted:
I.G.S.
Auswanderungs
Gut
Nro. 89

(The lid’s text is extremely faded, but still legible.)

Interior Description:

Two layers of interior paper (one, a brown and white floral print and the other, wax paper) were badly deteriorated at purchase. Most lay in a heap in the center of the trunk. The wood underneath appears to be in good condition. On the inside center of the lid is a hand-illustrated floral frame in pinks, blues, and greens. The remnant edges of someone’s handwriting are still visible along the frame.
