I have been searching for some time for any information on a Mary Barnes, probably born sometime around 1900. She married John Grayson. They had a daugher, Dora, born in 1924. I cannot seem to find any information on either of them. Any help or information would be appreciated.

Notes for Thomas "Tom" Barnes:
1900 Cocke County, TNED 169 #51Birthdates for he and Fannie are from the 1900 Cocke County, TN census, aren't quite the same as indicated in some earlier censuses. Thomas and his family were in the 12th District (Upper Cosby) of Cocke County, TN in the 1870 census. Children still at home then were: William, Lawson, Nancy, Mary, John, 'Puss', and Sarah. In 1880 children still home with Thomas and Fanny were: John, 'Puss', and 'Sallie' (Sarah). By 1900 all their kids were gone from home but they had a granddaughter, Mary , living with them.

Notes for John T. "Turkey John" Sutton:
He was said to have been called "Turkey John" because he could call turkeys. Betsy was a well-known, well-traveled mid-wife. His name on his headstone is simply "John", Elizabeth's name is 'Elizabeth M.".

ii. Margaret Barnes, born August 22, 1844 in North Carolina; died February 8, 1926 in Sevier County, TN; married Alfred Carter "Carter" Sutton Bef. 1870; born April 4, 1846 in North Carolina; died February 10, 1931 in Sevier County, TN.

More About Margaret Barnes:
Burial: Fowler Cemetery, Cosby, Sevier County, TN

Notes for Alfred Carter "Carter" Sutton:
There's a LOT of questions about Carter, his ancestry, and his descendants, especially his son, James "Jimmy". Carter appears in the 1850 Cocke County, TN census in the household of his mother, PEGGY RAINS, listed as ALFRED C., age 4, born in Tenn . In the 1860 Cocke County, TN census he was listed in the household of his mother, MARGARET (same person as Peggy) RAINES, as CARTER, age 15, born in Tenn. In 1870 he had married and appeared as a head-of-household in the Haywood County, NC census, Jonathans Creek, as CARTER SUTTON, 23, wife Margaret, 21, James, 3, and William, 1. In the 1880 census he was again in Cocke County, TN, District 12, listed as CARTER SUTTON, 33. His family was: Margaret, 33, wife, James, 13, son, William, 8, son, Mary A. , 6, dau, Alfred, 3, son, and Balium, 1, son. We know that Carter was in Cocke County, TN in 1890 because he appears as "Carter Sutton, Sutton Post Office (upper Cosby), Cocke County, TN" in the census of Civil War veterans. In the 1900 census Carter was back in Haywood County, NC, living at Catalooche. We haven't found him in the 1910 census but in 1910 at least three of his sons were living in Sevier County, TN, and he and Margaret WERE in the household of their son, William, in Sevier County, TN in the 1920 census. Carter's first marriage, to Nancy, apparently didn't last long. We've no idea whether she died or they divorced.
Carter was a Civil War veteran, Co E, 9th Tenn Cavalry. Carter once told his granddaughter that his father was a MILLER. Family tradition says Carter's father was David MILLER (there WAS an ALFRED CARTER MILLER in Cocke County also!) and Carter is known by the family to have had a half-brother, Thomas Miller (20 Jan 1861-20 Jan 1934), although some dispute this.

iii. William M. "Bill" Barnes, born November 18, 1846 in Catalooche, Haywood County, NC; died January 2, 1944; married (1) Stacy Salinda Brown in Cocke County, TN; born 1855 in Fines Creek, Haywood County, NC; died March 28, 1929; married (2) Harriet E. Moore September 12, 1896; born January 1877 in Tenn Valley Memory Garden, Knox County, TN.

Notes for William M. "Bill" Barnes:
His middle initial sometimes appears as "H", which MIGHT indicate "Henry", which MIGHT account for the son HENRY who is frequently listed as a son for Thomas. In the 1850 Haywood County, NC census there is a 2-year old son "Henry" listed with Thomas. There's no "Henry" listed with Thomas in the 1860 Haywood census, but there was a 10-year old "William." If WILLIAM isn't the same son as HENRY then it's possible "Henry" died young. William's birthdate shown here is from his headstone an d is clearly wrong. He did not appear in the 1850 census, was 10 years old in 1860.
William and Stacy had at least FOUR other children who died young, including a set of triplets.
William and Stacy divorced before 1896 and she apparently got all her children. She appears with those children in the 1900 through 1920 Cocke County, TNcensuses. In 1920 she was in the household of her son Charles.
William and Harriet and kids were in Cocke County, TN for the 1900 census, in Haywood County, NC for the 1910 census.

Burial: Barnes Valley Cemetery, Hartford, Cocke County, TN

Notes for Harriet E. Moore:
Her last name also appears as "McMahan"!

iv. Nancy Jane Barnes, born June 1851 in North Carolina; died November 23, 1937; married James M. "Froggy" "Jim" Brown 1870 in Cocke County, TN; born June 15, 1857 in Fines Creek, Haywood County, NC; died March 18, 1941.

More About Nancy Jane Barnes:
Burial: James Brown Cemetery, Cocke County, TN

Notes for James M. "Froggy" "Jim" Brown:
1880 Cocke County, TN district 12, #46 1900 ", #255.In November 1889 he bought, from his mother and siblings, the property of his deceased father. The birthdate shown here for James doesn't agree well with Haywood County, NC census records which show him as TEN years old in the 1860 census. Also have a birth date of June 1850.

v. Samuel Lawson "Los" Barnes, born 1852 in North Carolina; died in Cocke County, TN; married Martha Messer; born 1856 in North Carolina; died in Cocke County, TN.

He appeared in the 1910 census, was deceased before 1920.

ix. "Puss" Barnes, born 1864 in North Carolina.

Notes for "Puss" Barnes:
Some genealogies identify this child as a SON, ISAAC, who married Sally Jenkins. However, the 1860 and 1870 Cocke County census list this child as a DAUGHTER, "Puss". In Cocke County marriage records a PUSS Barnes married a John GROOMS on 8 Sep 1881. BIG QUESTIONS here!!

x. Sarah "Sally" Barnes, born 1866.

14. Valentine Garver, born 1811 in North Carolina. He married 15. Catherine *Garver.
15. Catherine *Garver, born 1834 in North Carolina.

Notes for Valentine Garver:
Valentine and family first appear in Cocke County, TN in the 1870 census. Catherine is considerably younger than Valentine, PROBABLY is a second wife. It's not CERTAIN that she's the mother of these children.

Children of Valentine Garver and Catherine *Garver are:
i. Julia A. Garver, born 1858 in North Carolina; died 1921 in Cocke County, TN; married Alex Williams.
7 ii. Eldora "Dora" Garver, born August 18, 1862; died May 1930; married (1) John Barnes August 10, 1882; married (2) Drewery Francis Jenkins March 17, 1896 in Cocke County, TN.

More About Celia Garver:
Burial: Fowler Cemetery, Cosby, Sevier County, TN

Notes for Lemuel A. Fowler:
They may be the "Andrew Fowler and MARY TRANTHAM" who married 11 April 1886 in Cocke County. Her headstone inscription reads "Wife of L. A."

Burial: Fowler Cemetery, Cosby, Sevier County, TN

v. William Harrison "Harrison" Garver, born April 23, 1874; married (1) Isabella "Isabelle" Jenkins January 15, 1897 in Cocke County, TN; born January 16, 1877 in Tennessee; died January 26, 1914; married (2) Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gilliland Aft. 1914; born 1868 in Tennessee; died 1949.

Notes for William Harrison "Harrison" Garver:
His sister, Dora, married Isabella's brother, Drewery Jenkins.

More About William Harrison "Harrison" Garver:

Stanley,

I noticed several names from my family lines in your posting. Do you know if the Green Lloyd Valentine you mendtioned was the son of David Valentine and Rhoda Baxter? If so he was my grgr uncle and brother to Giles Caton Valentine, whose son William "Hack" Haskell Valentine was married to Amanda Barnes, daughter of William Anse Barnes son of Henry Harvey Barnes and Catherine Caldwell Barnes.
We believe Henry was the son of Mariah Barnes Price and brother of Thomas Barnes, who was executor of Henry's estate. I have copies of the probate records. Some census records show there to be 2 males in the household with Mariah that could well be Thomas and Harvey as her sons. I believe that Mariah had a sister named Elizabeth and their father was a Joseph Barnes.
I would love to compare info and see if we can find something that would prove what the relationship is to these Barnes.
I have also noticed that some of Brenda Messer's info on the Barnes and Valentines is not quite accurate, I have seen some info I know that is incorrect and have contacted her before and asked that she recheck her sources.
