FTM 2014 Index of individuals not sorting alphabetically

I've upgraded to FTM 2014 and managed to avoid the syncing problem, but have a problem with the index of individuals. Whenever I bring it up (e.g. F2, or trying to link to an existing source based on name) it is not sorted alphbetically (see attached image). I seems the people who were in the tree when I imported it are alpha sorted, but anyone I've added since is randomly added to the beginning of the list.

I can sort the main index by name (it has sort options), but when you're trying to link to an existing source and wanting to search by name it can't be done. Having to manually look through several thousand names to find the right person is frustrating.

Has anyone else had this problem and/or got any suggestions?

Thanks!

Sometimes there is a leading space or other non-displayable character in the surname field. That will cause what you are seeing.

I had the same type of problem in FTM2012, but have not seen it in FTM2014 yet; although my mini-tree, at the top of the Person tab becomes "detached" from the "selected person" often in FTM2014 and has never happened in any previous version.

My experience was a tad different, in that in my situation, the names sorted by surname fine, but new names for the first name would sort to the bottom of the surname, first name combination and be out of date order.

Have you tried clicking on the header where it shows "Name"? My experience was that that a time-consuming procedure for me (for 60,000 plus names) and only lasted that work session. Since you only have 3,000 name, the time shouldn't take that long.

Also note the you can click on the down arrow at the top of the Index screen, or the top of the person tab and it will list all the people you have worked on in that session.

And, finally, you can always navigate to the Tree tab, find your person there, then return to the Person tab - very inconvenient.

I would report this as a bug at:

The list can be sorted by clicking on the heading that you want to sort by. Try selecting one and see if things update.

I'd looked for leading spaces, but not for non-display characters. It seems that this is the problem (Thanks Tulrose). I've gone back and looked at the names again, and I think it may be that they are the people who were added by merging sources through the web search function.

Is anyone aware of a way to fix this without having to change each name manually?

I have tried to get the index to sort. If I'm trying to find a person to switch to their record, there is an option to sort by name (which will work, but needs to be resorted every time) but there is no way to have this happen when you're trying to link to an existing source. Luckily I have split my family tree into four parts to keep the size down and haven't brought the rest into FTM 2014 as yet.

I will log this as a bug. I'd not been able to find a web page to use for this, so thanks for putting the link up, silverfox3280.

Try these suggestions in the suggestion order

I would suggest that you compact your file which also forces a reindex

Then close the file and reopen it

What happens?

If that does not work try displaying the index a couple of alternative ways then come back to your surname sort

What happens?

I would also export the file as a GEDCOM and load it back with the new file name

What happens?

I think I'm having the same problem as you describe and I recall my problem started w/Windows 8.1 (don't recall it in W 8.0).

When working in the Person tab I notice that the main sections still display my chosen person but the mini-tree at the top has changed (usually to the spouse of the person I'm working on). Not sure this causes me any problem other than potential confusion on my part.

If this is the same as what you describe, I'd be interested in hearing how you address this issue (if you even feel it's an 'issue').

Sometimes I can stop this occurrence by closing FTM then reopening, although usually it takes a Windows reboot to fully clear. I have to admit it's possible for me to go several days w/o shut down or reboot, so I suppose there could be some file corruption that leads to this 'problem'.

Sorry to ramble off subject to this Thread but this is the first time I've notice another user mention this issue.

The only thing I've been able to do is to use the list of individuals accessed in the current work session at the down arrow button next to the mini-tree index button.

The problem of non-sorting is often caused by an unusual letter in a name. If you use a foreign letter, e.g. French or Swedish, FTM is unable to sort it. If you look at the top of the list of names in the index, this one is usually the culprit. If you change a date or add another letter to the name, it will fall into place in the index, alphabetically. All other names added after this name will not correct automatically and the alphabetical sorting of future names added will not take place until you have modified every unsorted name in the list. Once you have done this, everything will be back to normal. If a name consists of three words e.g. John Adam Smith, if you add a space bar between any of the names, it won't correct the problem. If the name is e.g. John Adam George Smith, you can insert a space bar and enter, and automatically this person will be sorted. For people with three word names or less, you have to add a digit to any of the names, or change a date, for the sort to commence. No idea why, but it has worked for me on numerous occasions.
