Hi,
does anyone know of any "major" cemteries in Somerville? I am doing some genealogical research for a friend of mine, and several of her relatives were in the Medford and Somerville areas. I already got burials from Oak Grove in Medford. Now I need to go to Somerville and find where her relatives were buried....they lived on Cedar St. Does this help???? Any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.

This is turning out to be a really good question...I live in Mass; and as I am searching the web for cemeteries in Somerville I am finding that not much turns up. A historic site: Old Cemetery, is located at the corner of Somerville Ave. & School St. according to the Nat'l Reg. of Historic places. It was est. in 1804 but I have no info on when/if burials stopped there. I have a feeling you will find that many Somerville residents were buried in Malden, Medford, Everett or maybe even Cambridge; where all the large cemeteries are. Cedar St. appears to be closer to West Somerville which is sort of on the Cambridge, Arlington, Medford side of town. I suggest you try contacting the city of Somerville to inquire; I can't really find any info on their website on cemeteries. Here's a link to their site:
http://www.somervillema.gov/

I also suggest you check Oak Grove for the Somerville residents too; if you haven't already...
If any of these folks died in the 1890-1910 era, let me know the names b/c I have access to Mass VR's and the later deaths usually give place of burial.

Another potentially helpful resource might be the Somerville Library. It looks like they have a nice local history department:

Good luck. Post here what you find because I'm kind of baffled! I have ancestors buried in Forestdale in Malden and Wyoming Cem. in Melrose, which are practically next to each other...but anyhow this interests me!

Hello. I'm pretty sure that someone told me last year that there was only one cemetery in Somerville -- the small, old one.

One set of my grandparents lived a good part of their life in Somerville, and, when my grandmother died in the 1960's, she was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.

On the other side of my "tree," my great-grandfather's sister and her husband spent all of their life in Somerville. I just found out this month that they were buried in the Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose (1920's).

And, we have a relative who spent most of her life in Somerville, and, when she died 2 years ago, she was buried in the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.

I just looked at my old street-map book, and the "Somerville Cemetery" is only shown as a very small box on Somerville Ave. That street is only a few streets away from the Cambridge line.

(I've been in Somerville many times but I've never seen that "graveyard?." In the spring I'll try to drive there and see what it looks like.)

The cemetery in Somerville is on Somerville Ave right next to the DeMoula's Market Basket parking lot (400 Somerville Ave). You can see a great bird's eye view of it on maps.live.com. Direct link is

Hello. Thank you for those maps. I looked at both of them and now see what the cemetery looks like.

From the air, it doesn't look like there are very many stones in the small cemetery.

Betty

P.S.
I e-mailed the Somerville Library this morning to ask about the cemetery, and maybe I'll write a letter to the Somerville Museum.

The name of the cemetary on Somerville Ave is Milk Row Cemetary and from what I have read it's the only cemetary in Somerville. It's a historical landmark now and you would have to get in touch with the historical society to get more info. They do tours of the cemetary around Hallowen.
Here are some linke about it.
