Does anyone have any information that might connect the families of Gen. Philemon Thomas(1763-1847)husband of Mary Craig, and Henry Thomas(1743-1798)husband of Mary Barbara Ory. Both ultimately of EBR Parish. I am aware that Henry Francis Thomas,Jr(1774-1820),husband of Elizabeth Kleinpeter named one of his sons Philemon.(1816-1847)I suspect the connection would have had to have been in Germany or Maryland after the immigration of the senior Henry Thomas and would have been a relative of the senior Henry Thomas who would have been Philemon's father or grandfather.

It might be that the name was selected because of GPT's major role in the West Florida Revolution (1810.)

I had actually posted this reply before the pithy one above but it disappeared.
My wife is a descendant of great but unrecognized American hero General Philemon Thomas. GPT married Mary Polly Craig and they had two daughters, Frances and Elizabeth. Then he married Fanny Hawkins and had two daughters Mary and Fanny.

His father was Richard Thomas II (1731-1798) and his grandfather was Richard Thomas (1680-1748).

By chance I was able to trace GPT's ancestors back to Wales. The tree is posted on Rootsweb as thomas wales.

I believe that he was my great grandfather's great uncle. I have a letter written by my great uncle Willie Thomas describing the brother of his great grandfather "Richard" as being Philemon Thomas of Louisiana.

Thank you. That date matches my information. How can I trace this back to Wales? Thank you so much.

The parents I have for William ap Thomas are not correct. They died before William ap was born.
