Our family came to Georgia from North Carolina. We have the names of at least two Chance's that came to Burke County, Georgia. The names were Reuben and James. Evidently there were others also as we have not been able to tie to either of these. Do you have any connection to these? Simpson Chance also came to Georgia, died in Houston County. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Descendants of William Chance, the Emigrant

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 CHANCE, THE EMIGRANT1 was born in England2, and died 1685 in Somerset Co., Md., Liber 11, Folio 3773. He married LATER CHANCE ELIZABETH4 WFT Est. 1653-1683. She was born in England.

Notes for WILLIAM CHANCE, THE EMIGRANT:
Hilda Chance writes, pg. 12: William and Elizabeth Chance emigrated from England to Somerset Co., Md. in 1668."... and... " William reared a large family on the banks of the Choptank River in Maryland", and continues with " came to America with Lord Baltimore in the year of 1668". (her source: La. State Univ. and AM College, Baton Rouge, La.)

Narris Wade Braly (NWbraly@ yahoo.com) writes that William "Will" and Elizabeth Chance came to America with Lord Baltimore and, during 1668, settled on the Eastern Shore of Maryland... for more info, see "www.cemetery.state.tx.us/pub/user_form.asp". He also states that James Chance (1795-1864) was their "second great"-grandson. James was born in Montgomery Co., Ga. on Dec. 30, 1795, and is buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. His body was reinterred during renovations to the cemetery in 1936.

William, Sr. died before Sept. 1685, at which time, his widow, Elizabeth, drew up Deed of Gift papers for her sons, William and Richard. The document mentions her home as being near Betty's Cove Meetinghouse.

Notes for LATER CHANCE ELIZABETH:
William, Sr. died before Sept. 1685, at which time, his widow, Elizabeth, drew up Deed of Gift papers for her sons, William and Richard. The document mentions her home as being near Betty's Cove Meetinghouse.

Children of WILLIAM CHANCE and LATER ELIZABETH are:
2. i. WILLIAM2 CHANCE, JR., b. April 1677; d. Abt. March 29, 1740, Talbot Co., Md..
3. ii. RICHARD CHANCE, SR., b. September 1680; d. 1747, Queen Anne Co., Md.; will filed in Bk. 25, pg. 255.

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM2 CHANCE, JR. (WILLIAM1)5 was born April 16776, and died Abt. March 29, 1740 in Talbot Co., Md.7.

Child of WILLIAM CHANCE, JR. is:
i. ABSALOM (UNPROVEN)3 CHANCE8, b. 17069.

Notes for ABSALOM (UNPROVEN) CHANCE:
Susan Chance Rainwater gives the possibility that Absalom must be the son of either William, Jr., or Richard, Sr. Absalom states in a depostion that he is 42 years old in 1748, thereby making his birthyear 1706. (source: Heirs and Legatees of Caroline Co., Md., 1774-1895, Land Commission Records/ also:1815-1863 Chancery County Court Records by Irma Harper). She further says that this is NOT the child of Elijah and Rebecca Atwell Chance, which might indicate there is another Absalom at about the same time..

3. RICHARD2 CHANCE, SR. (WILLIAM1)10 was born September 168010, and died 1747 in Queen Anne Co., Md.; will filed in Bk. 25, pg. 25511. He married ELINOR PEARSON12 June 10, 1704 in St. Peter's Parish, Talbot Co., Md.13, daughter of ROBERT PEARSON and SARAH PEARSON.

Notes for RICHARD CHANCE, SR.:

Hilda writes: His will in Queen Anne County named sons Boon and John Chance, each half of land called "Little Worth". To sons, Elijah and Bacheldor, land "Bare Point". Sons William and Warner. Daughters: Rachel Swift, Elizabeth Bartlett, Ruth Jordan and Juliana Pearson. Grandchildren: Thomas Whittington and Eleanor Jordan. They (ed. note: Richard and Elinor) had 13 children. Of these, Bartholomew and Elinor were deceased. Signed Peter Rich, Sidney Rich." Richard m. Elinor Pearson (Piercson) m. June 10, 1704, dau. of Robert Pearson, who died Oct. 23, 1721. His will made in 1716 in Talbot County, Md. and named wife, Sarah." See page 8.

John Chance is in the Littleworth (on the Choptank River, Queen Anne Co.) record as "1771-John Chance, now in Craven Co., NC, conveyed it to brother Bacheldor Chance, still in Queen Anne Co., Md., land which was left to John by Father, Richard Chance. Queen Anne Co. Book G, pg. 341". (This latter entry is found on pg.10 of the Supplemental Book.)
This rambling discourse is difficult to follow as to whom she is referring. For that reason these dates/names have not been entered into data on Elinor/Robert Pearson.

Under the heading in Hilda's book, "Littleworth, Choptank" land, 1730- William Willis was first owner, sold it to Richard Chance, 1735." Then,
"1747 Richard Chance left it to sons, Boon and John Chance." Then,
"1774 Richard, son of Boon Chance and GRANDSON of (FIRST?) Richard, sold part of it to Henry Oldfield, father of his wife, Rachel." (This last reference is very likely an error... should read "father of his mother, Rachel".)

Notes for ELINOR PEARSON:
Named in her father's will proved 23 Oct. 1723 and left 12d.

Children of RICHARD CHANCE and ELINOR PEARSON are:
4. i. ELEANOR3 CHANCE, b. Bet. 1701 - 1729.
5. ii. JOHN CHANCE, b. Bet. 1701 - 1729.
iii. JULIANA CHANCE14, b. Bet. 1701 - 1729; m. PEARSON14.
iv. RACHEL CHANCE14, b. Bet. 1701 - 1729; m. MOSES SWIFT15, January 1, 1743/44, Queen Anne's Co., Md., St. Luke's Parish16.
v. RUTH CHANCE17, b. Bet. 1701 - 1729; m. JORDAN17.
6. vi. WARNER CHANCE, b. Bet. 1701 - 1729, Probably Queen Anne's Co., Md.; d. September 18, 1746, Beaufort Co., NC.
7. vii. WILLIAM (TWIN) CHANCE, b. March 2, 1705/06, Talbot, Queen Anne's Co., Md.; d. January 18, 1767, Craven Co., NC.
8. viii. RICHARD (TWIN) CHANCE, b. March 3, 1705/06; d. 1765, Dorchester Co., Md..
ix. ELIZABETH CHANCE, b. September 11, 170717; m. JOHN BARTLETT18, October 14, 1731, Talbot Co., Md., St. Peters' Parish19.
9. x. BOON CHANCE, b. 1712; d. Abt. February 27, 1771, Caroline Co., Md..
10. xi. ELIJAH CHANCE, b. 1714; d. 1782, Craven Co. NC.
xii. BARTHOLOMEW CHANCE20, b. 171820; m. DEBORAH OLDFIELD20, July 7, 1743, St. Peter's Parish, Talbot Co., Md.21.
11. xiii. BACHELDOR(N) CHANCE, b. Abt. 1720; d. Abt. August 1780.

Generation No. 3

4. ELEANOR3 CHANCE (RICHARD2, WILLIAM1)22 was born Bet. 1701 - 1729. She married THOMAS WHITTINGTON23, son of THOMAS WHITTINGTON.

Child of ELEANOR CHANCE and THOMAS WHITTINGTON is:
i. BENJAMIN4 WHITTINGTON23, m. MARY CARROLL23.

Notes for BENJAMIN WHITTINGTON:
Benj. Whittington moved to Georgia, Gennessee and Illinois. They had a son named Wiley, whose son, Scott, married Mary Ramsey. Their daughter married John Q. Adams. This information submitted by Irma Adams of Lynchburg, Va., no other information as to whether this is the President John Q. Adams. (source: Hilda's Supplementary Book, pg. 14).

5. JOHN3 CHANCE (RICHARD2, WILLIAM1)24 was born Bet. 1701 - 1729. He married SINAI.

Notes for JOHN CHANCE:
THIRTY THOUSAND NAMES/GERMANY, SWISS, DUTCH, FRENCH IMMIGRANTS IN PENNSYLVANIA, FROM 1727-1776., by Prof. I. D. Rupp., Genealogical Pub. Co., 1965 states on pgs. 463-464:
"John Chance, 1" ... pg. 463 explains that New Rochelle, in West Chester Co., NY, was early settled by Hugenots from Rochelle in France. This list was compiled on Dec. 9, 1710. No indication what the "1" stands for.

"Jhn moved to Wayne Co., NC. John, Benjamin, Samuel, and Stephen all had lands in Wayne Co. between 1782-1803. It was in Wayne Co. that Benjamin, son of John and grandson of Richard Chance sold his share of Littleworth in Maryland to Dorrington Chance, his cousin, still in Maryland... (her source: Caroline Co., Liber. JR G, pg. 343." Hilda Chance Supplement Book, pg. 13.

Hilda has a John Chance on the Baltimore census for 1790, as well as a Richard in 1778 at Bridgetown Md.

Hilda also states "see page 41", of which I was not provided a copy.

Child of JOHN CHANCE and SINAI is:
i. BENJAMIN4 CHANCE, b. 175325; d. Abt. 181626.

Notes for BENJAMIN CHANCE:
This Benjamin, according to Hilda Chance, was the son of John Chance, grandson of Richard Chance. He was named as Grantor (seller) of his share of "Littleworth, on the Choptank River, Queen Anne Co.") (Maryland?) He sold this share to Dorrington Chance of Caroline Co., Md., who was the son of Bacheldor Chance, of Caroline Co., Md. (G-page 341). (10-15-99... unknown how Bacheldo and Dorrington fit into this mish-mash.) (2-18-00... Hilda says on pg. 13 of the Supplement that Benjamin and Dorrington Chance were cousins. She also states that John, Samuel and Stephen, as well as Benjamin, had lands in Wayne Co., NC.

Hilda gives the birthdate of "our" Benjamin as 1740... also his father was Samuel, as provided in other documentation, so this is NOT our Benjamin!! Susan Chance Rainwater, however, gives this Benjamin's wife's name as Rachel, so she probably has the two Benjamin's comingled.

1786 Tax Lists, Wayne Co., N.C. name Benjamin (100 acres), Stephen (100 acres), Vincent (900 acres), Phillip (no land), and Henry Chance (100 acres). Pgs. 103-104. This appears to be the NC Chances.
.

6. WARNER3 CHANCE (RICHARD2, WILLIAM1)27 was born Bet. 1701 - 1729 in Probably Queen Anne's Co., Md.28, and died September 18, 1746 in Beaufort Co., NC28.

Notes for WARNER CHANCE:
Warner Chance moved to Beaufort Co., NC.before 1741. At least one of Warner's brothers went with him to NC (unconfirmed by Susan Chance Rainwater). His nephew, Samuel, is the individual who ended up in Indiana.

He had two wills filed, one in Anapolis (Queen Anne's Co., Book 24, pg. 470), Md. and one in NC. He left land in Beaufort Co. on the Bare River and Moses Creek to daughters Abigail and Naomi. "The last child my wife bore me was Jonathan". A note on the back of the paper said, "Heir at large, Jonathan Chance." He named brother Elijah as Executor, who would received the lands upon the deaths of Warner's daughters. (source: Hilda's Supplemental Book, pg. 14)

Children of WARNER CHANCE are:
i. ABIGAIL4 CHANCE29.
ii. NAOMI CHANCE29.
iii. JONATHAN CHANCE30.

Notes for JONATHAN CHANCE:
This Jonathan MIGHT BE the Jonathan who is the ancestor sought by several researchers on the Chance GenForum site. If so, his marriage record on 18 Aug 1798 shows his marriage to Sarah Gray in Kent Co., Md. (source: More Maryland Deponents 1716-1799, Henry C. Peden, Jr.... from Early Evidence for the Chance Family at Chronography.com.).

7. WILLIAM (TWIN)3 CHANCE (RICHARD2, WILLIAM1)31 was born March 2, 1705/06 in Talbot, Queen Anne's Co., Md.32, and died January 18, 1767 in Craven Co., NC33. He married ELIZABETH OLDFIELD34 1755 in North Carolina, daughter of WILLIAM OLDFIELD. She was born February 2, 1718/19 in St. Peters' Parish, Talbot Co., Md.35, and died Aft. August 11, 1766 in Craven Co., NC35.

Notes for WILLIAM (TWIN) CHANCE:
Source for William and Elizabeth Chance: Hilda Chance's "Chance Family: England to America, 1668-1972, 1970" and 1981 Supplement.

April 29, 1763: William and Elizabeth Chance (UNPROVEN that this is the same couple, although the dates and place are accurate) of Dorchester Co., Md. sell 82 acres of "Chance's Inclosure" and 22.5 acres of Joneses "Hazzard" to Jos. Gill of Queen Anne's Co., Md. Source: Susan Chance Rainwater's source: Abstracts from Land Records of Dorchester Co., Md., Vol. E., by McAllister

William, Sr.'s. will was written in 1767 in Craven Co., NC, names wife Elizabeth and children: Vincent, Stephen and Philemon and daughter's Frances Purse, Rachel Dill and Eve Gilstrop. Hilda Chance also names siblings: Oldfield, Hargrove, Henry, Margaret and Eve. Deceased siblings in 1767 were: Aaron, Frances, and Rachel.

Records in Craven Co., NC: Vincent Chance, Mar. 21, 1777 sold land to john Gilleard, land on Holly Branch, near John Clitherals. This was land granted to William Chance, Sept. 26, 1766, who gave it to his son, Oldfield Chance, who then sold it to his brother, Vincent Chance. This was signed by "Vinson" Chance, Henery Chance, and Mary Bryan. Other Deeds in Craven Co., NC index include: "Moses-1784, Isaac-1766- Samuel-1768- John 1768, Vincent - 1775, Margaret - 1784. These only name the Grantor or Grantee."

Hilda Chance states "William raised a company in 1812, became Captain in East Feliciana Militia, participated in the Battle of New Orleans". This must be a younger William, because this William died many years earlier. She further states, " Stephen and John were in Capt. Wm. Chance's Company. They married sisters: John m. Zilpah Doughty and Stephen m. Elizabeth Doughty."

Notes for ELIZABETH OLDFIELD:
11 Aug 1766 living in NC, according to her father's will of that date. Will also names Aaron Chance as his friend and executor. Will filed on 12 Nov. 1766.

Children of WILLIAM CHANCE and ELIZABETH OLDFIELD are:
12. i. VINCENT "VINSON"4 CHANCE, b. March 17, 1758, Maryland; d. November 25, 1824, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana.
13. ii. PHILEMON CHANCE, b. 1760, NC; d. December 11, 1816, E. Feliciana Parish, La..
iii. AARON CHANCE, b. Bet. 1727 - 1755; d. Aft. January 18, 1767, Dorchester Co., Maryland36.

Notes for AARON CHANCE:
Aaron is likely the Aaron who served as Executor for Wm. Oldfield, father of Elizabeth Oldfield Chance. Wm. died between August and November 1766 in Dorchester Co., Md.

iv. HENRY CHANCE, b. Bet. 1727 - 1755; m. ELIZA.

Notes for HENRY CHANCE:
Hilda has a tantilizing comment on pg. 121, stating, "Henry M. Chance m. Suzanne Sharpless, a cousin of Rachel Sharplesss who married a Benjamin Chance. This also was an item, updated. I think this Henry and Suzanne were ancestors of a group of Chances in Delaware County today, who will not answer and have no interest."

I have only two Henry's in my file, this one and one in North Carolina, son of Boon Chance of the William and Elizabeth line.

1786 Tax Lists, Wayne Co., N.C. name Benjamin (100 acres), Stephen (100 acres), Vincent (900 acres), Phillip (no land), and Henry Chance (100 acres). Pgs. 103-104. This appears to be the NC Chances.

v. OLDFIELD CHANCE, b. Bet. 1727 - 1750; d. Aft. 1790, Jones Co., NC possible.

Notes for OLDFIELD CHANCE:
Oldfield Chance deeds 100 acres of land on Holly branch near Judge Falls' land to Vincent Chance for 18 lbs. This land was originally patented to William Chance, Sept. 26, 1766 in Book 21, p. 237 of Craven Co., NC.

Continuing in Craven Co., NC, : Oldfield Chance, Jan. 6, 1775, land to Vincent Chance for 18 lbs, 100 acres on Holly branch near Judge Falls' land, land that was patented to Wm. Chance, Sept. 26, 1766 (Bk. 21, p. 237).

14. vi. STEPHEN CHANCE, b. 1760, NC or Md.; d. Aft. 1820, Burke Co., Ga..
vii. FRANCES CHANCE, b. Bet. 1727 - 1755; d. Bef. 176737; m. PURSE.
viii. RACHEL CHANCE, b. Bet. 1727 - 1755; d. Bef. 176737; m. GILL (DILL).
ix. EVE CHANCE, b. Bet. 1727 - 1755; m. GILSTROP.
x. MARGARET CHANCE, b. Bet. 1727 - 1755; d. Aft. 1784.
xi. HARGROVE CHANCE, b. Bet. 1727 - 1755.

16. xiii. SAMUEL (UNPROVEN) CHANCE I, b. 1748, Queen Anne's Co., Md..

8. RICHARD (TWIN)3 CHANCE (RICHARD2, WILLIAM1)38 was born March 3, 1705/0638, and died 1765 in Dorchester Co., Md.38. He married MARTHA. She died Abt. 178338.

Notes for RICHARD (TWIN) CHANCE:
Susan Chance Rainwater identifies this couple as being from Dorchester Co., Md., when they sold 100 acres of Chance's Venture to H. Swiggett.

Notes for MARTHA:
Her will left her personal belongings to daughters Deborah Register and Naomi.

Children of RICHARD CHANCE and MARTHA are:
i. AARON4 CHANCE, b. Bet. 1726 - 1769.

Notes for AARON CHANCE:
This child is not given in the list of children born to Richard and Martha Chance...I am leaving him here until I re-discover my source on this child.
Wanda "wanda@chancesr.com" agrees with this determination from her own research as well.

ii. DEBORAH CHANCE39, b. Abt. 1750; d. Aft. 176540; m. JAMES REGESTER41; b. July 8, 1753, Talbot Co., Md.; d. 1799, Greene Co., Tn..

Notes for DEBORAH CHANCE:
Deborah m. James Regester, son of Francis and Margaret Bartlett Regester. Both the Bartletts and Regesters were Quakers, according to researcher Carol Yates Wilkerson.

iii. NAOMI CHANCE42, d. Aft. 176543.
17. iv. DANIEL CHANCE, b. Bet. 1730 - 1740, Queen Anne's Co., Md..
v. ISAAC CHANCE44, d. Aft. January 21, 176345; m. ELIZABETH45; d. Aft. January 21, 176345.

Notes for ISAAC CHANCE:
Isaac and Elizabeth were residing in Dorchester Co., Md. when, on Jan. 21, 1763, they sell 18 acres of Chance's Lot to Henry Swiggett.

vi. WILLIAM CHANCE46, b. Bet. 1725 - 174047.

Notes for WILLIAM CHANCE:
William was "of age in 1765".

18. vii. RICHARD CHANCE.
viii. MOSES CHANCE48.

Notes for MOSES CHANCE:
Moses moved to North Carolina; deeds are there, according to Hilda Chance, pg. 12, Supplement book.

ix. LEVI CHANCE48.

Notes for LEVI CHANCE:
Levi "was of age in 1765".

x. ELIJAH CHANCE48, d. Abt. 1782, Craven Co., NC(?).

Notes for ELIJAH CHANCE:
Elijah was "of age" in 1765.

In Craven Co., NC: Estate of Elijah Chance, July 5, 1782, proven Sept., 1782 . .

9. BOON3 CHANCE (RICHARD2, WILLIAM1)49 was born 171249, and died Abt. February 27, 1771 in Caroline Co., Md.49. He married RACHEL OLDFIELD49 July 15, 174649, daughter of HENRY OLDFIELD and SARAH.

Notes for BOON CHANCE:
Hilda Chance says in the Supplement Book, pg. 13 to see Page 55, of which I was not provided a copy.

Children of BOON CHANCE and RACHEL OLDFIELD are:
i. RICHARD4 CHANCE50, b. Bet. 1726 - 1769.

Notes for RICHARD CHANCE:
Hilda has a Richard Chance in Craven Co., NC in 1790 and 1800.

Under the heading in Hilda's book, "Littleworth, Choptank" land, 1730- William Willis was first owner, sold it to Richard Chance, 1735." Then,
"1747 Richard Chance left it to sons, Boon and John Chance." Then,
"1774 Richard, son of Boon Chance and GRANDSON of (FIRST?) Richard, sold part of it to Henry Oldfield, father of his wife, Rachel." (This last reference is very likely an error... should read "father of his mother, Rachel".)

ii. JOSHUA CHANCE50, b. Bet. 1726 - 1769.
iii. PETER CHANCE50, b. Bet. 1726 - 1769.
iv. MARY CHANCE50, b. Bet. 1726 - 1769.
v. HENRY CHANCE50, b. Bet. 1726 - 1769.
vi. SARAH CHANCE50, b. Bet. 1726 - 1769.
vii. ELIZABETH CHANCE50, b. Bet. 1726 - 1769; m. DAVID EVANS, December 3, 1772, Baltimore Co., St Johns St. George's Parish, Md.51.

Notes for ELIZABETH CHANCE:
Guesstimate that this is the Elizabeth who m. Evans in Baltimore... dates fit, however. It could be another Elizabeth (10-15-99).

viii. ELINOR YOUNG CHANCE52, b. Bet. 1726 - 1769.
ix. REBECCA CHANCE52.

10. ELIJAH3 CHANCE (RICHARD2, WILLIAM1)53 was born 171453, and died 1782 in Craven Co. NC. He married REBECCA ATWELL, LATER CHANCE53 February 28, 1738/39 in Talbot Co., Md.54.

Notes for ELIJAH CHANCE:
Earlier source gave Elijah the birthdate of Jan. 17, 1728/29... this may be an error, and since the source is not given, I am using the date of 1714 for Elijah until proven otherwise.

Inventory of Elijah was on Aug. 29, 1758 (Administration Account lists John and Eleanor Chance as next-of-kin and Rebecca Chance as Administrator. Bk. 64, pg. 342, Queen Anne's Co., Md.

Hilda speculates that Elijah had children by another wife, i.e., including Tilghman, b. 1850. She refers the reader to pg. 88 of her Supplmental book for the line of Tilghman Chance.

In Craven Co., NC: Estate of Elijah Chance, July 5, 1782, proven Sept., 1782 . (Unknown if this note applies to this Elijah.)

Susan Chance Rainwater says on pg. 5 in Early Evidence for Chance fam. in Md. that Absalom (Unproven) Chance is NOT the child of Elijah and Rebecca Chance.

Notes for REBECCA ATWELL, LATER CHANCE:
In 1767 in Queen Anne Co., Md., Wm. Boon and wife, Rebecca, left all of "our interest in land, Bear Point, to "our son", Absolom. (source: Hilda's Supplemental Book pg. 13.)

Susan Chance Rainwater identifies this Absalom as the son of Elijah and Rebecca Chance... it would appear that he did not receive the gift of land of Bear Point (200 acres) until 27 March 1767.

Children of ELIJAH CHANCE and REBECCA ATWELL are:

From The Handbook of Texas Online(tsha.utexas.edu):
CHANCE, SAMUEL (ca. 1790-?). Samuel Chance, one of Stephen F. Austin'sqv Old Three Hundredqv colonists, was born in Georgia about 1790. He and his partner, Joseph H. Polley,qv received title to a league of land in Brazoria County, Texas, on July 27, 1824. The census of the Colorado District in 1825 and the colony census of March 1826 classified Chance as a farmer, a stock raiser, and a single man.

He married a daughter of Joseph San Pierre and applied for land adjoining San Pierre's on the Navidad River. In November 1830 the ayuntamientoqv at San Felipe appointed Chance commissioner to report on the best route for a road from Jennings's crossing on the Colorado River to Brazoria. He may have served as a private in William H. Patton'sqv Columbia Company during the Texas Revolutionqv in 1836. The Austin Texas Sentinelqv of October 7, 1841, listed a Sam Chance as owing direct taxes on property in Jackson County. The Fraimville area of Burleson County (see HIX, TEXAS) was originally settled by two brothers named James and Samuel Chance. A Samuel Chance lived in Milam County in 1850.

Dear Arthur,

You're welcome! Glad to know it was helpful... Since posting that data, I've heard from two other Chance researchers on Vincent's children, James F. and Eli... and now have them and their children in place... I'll have to re-post at some point, but if you need these, let me know and I'll send them to you.
