Australian Electoral Rolls

This is more a generic question, I've been trolling the rolls picking up sources in my database, and I've noticed around the WW2 timeframe most people have a code associated with the (ie SE6, S13, E5 etc)
What are they?.
Is there a legend to them?

Hi Glenn,

This was just the postal code system used before 4 digit postcodes were introduced. The UK still uses the same system. The letters refer to compass points, so SE is South East, and they were further divided into numbered sections, hence SE6.

Hi Debra

Thanks for that information, wasn't aware of the change in post code usage.
I was thinking it was something along the lines of a government wartime classification for conscription.

Cheers
Glenn
