Penticost Gardner

Surnames: Gardner Hughes
I am researching family of a Penticost Gardner, born abt 1799, who was married to a Eustacia "Stacy" Hughes, born abt 1804.

They had lived in North Carolina, moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee, then onto Wise County Virginia.

Stacy died in November of 1879 in North Carolina. "Widowed" husband Penticost was living with "a nephew", Irvin Hughes in 1880 in Bakersville, Mitchell, North Carolina.

I am posting to this board because I heard Washington County at one point in the last quarter of the 1700s, covered the entire state of Tennessee.

Very early on, there was a Washington County that encompassed most of what is now eastern Tennessee (NC ceded it's lands there to the U.S. government in 1790). However, it had ceased to be by the time Washington County in the eastern part of the state (the one covered by this message board) was formed from Tyrrell County in 1799. Tyrrell then went on to cede more land to Washington County in 1801.

Very confusing as same name, but different counties at different times.
