Classification: Query
Surnames: CASSEL, WOOD
Looking for information on a CASSEL baby born out of wedlock to Alice Susan CASSEL in 1872 at the age of 14. At the time the CASSEL family lived in Mallory & Millville Townships in Clayton Co, Iowa. The baby was born in Colesburg in Delaware Co, Iowa.

FAMILY LEGEND (unsubstantiated)
Alice CASSEL, Forest Henry CASSEL WOOD's mother, was captured (adopted) by the Dakota/Sioux tribe. When she returned from capitivity, she had a baby ... Forest ... she was age 14. He was given to Eliza CASSEL WOOD (aunt) and her husband George WOOD to raise. They had migrated from Iowa up the Mississippi River to Eau Galle, Dunn Co, Wisconsin in 1870. Most native americans were removed from Iowa in 1848, probably disproving this family legend. However, it is believed to be true that Forest's father was native american and the real story is lost for now.

Because he was born out of wedlock Forest’s own children would still whisper this story 50 years after his death. We know that Forest returned to Iowa at least twice as an adult and he specifically listed Colesburg as his place of birth. His birth year fluctuates between 1872 and 1876 in family information.

kcgoodman,

Your CASSEL research problem is interesting, to say the least. I notice that you mention Jane NOLAND Cassel in the Register of Communicants of the Hopewell Church Congregation, and wonder whether you've checked to see if Forest was baptised.

I have NOLANDs from PA and OH in Delaware and Clayton counties in the same era. I wonder whether you have any insight into whether your Jane NOLAND Cassel might be related to my George:
