Hi -

I am researching the ancestry of John ( b. 1830 / 1831 KY ) & Ermine ( possibly Frazer or variation of ) ( b. 1836 / 1837 KY ) Wooldrige / Wooldridge. They married probably 1854 / 1855 KY. They had a daughter, Mary ( b. 1855 / 1856 KY ) and a daughter, Martha ( b. 1856 / 1857 MO ).

In 1860 they were living in Grand River, Henry, MO. Also living with them were Alexander ( b. 1840 / 1841 MO ) and Nancy (b. 1858 / 1859 MO ) Faris ( or variation of ). I don't know the relation between Wooldridge and Faris nor the relationship between Alexander and Nancy. I'm thinking Alexander might have been married to or the son of a sister or niece of John or Ermine that may have died in childbirth and that Nancy was his daughter or sister. I believe Nancy took the Wooldridge name either through adoption or convenience and that as she got older was known as Nannie.

I have been unable to find actual birth records for any of these people or records of their ancestors. I am primarily interested in the biological ancestry of Nannie Wooldridge or Nancy Faris. Nannie Wooldridge b. 8/7/1859 married 12/1/1878 Saline, MO to ( H.H. ) Henry Horace Button. They had 3 children. There is only Nancy Faris in the 1860 census and no Nannie but both were born in 1859 so I am guessing they are one and the same.

Any info or clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Brian

I’m not related to any member of this family.

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

Thanks for going to the trouble for all this info. Unfortunately, I am looking for info on ancestors, not descendants. I have all of the descendant info. Maybe I should have made that more clear in my original post. Sorry to have wasted your time but I do appreciate the effort.

Brian
