Looking for an ancestor who came to the US during the Irish Potato Famine. Eliza Flynn Williamson born Belfast, N. Ireland in 1824, Flynn may have been here maiden name. She may have come over in 1849 with a son or daughter. The 1860 census lists a Livian Williamson living with her and her husband, Thomas Bell. They married in 1850. She was my Grandmother's grandmother. My grandmother was Lelia Bell Davisson, born in Iowa, and lived most of her life in Carthage and Webb City, MO.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

I apologize for not being clear. I was interested in her statistics about her family in Ireland. Also, what looks to be a child she may have had before she came to the US. The 1860 census lists a male 15 year old in the house and lists the name as Livian Williamson. I had not found anyone by that name in the census after 1860. Could have been in the war, but still nothing turns up about that name. I do have her genealogy after her arrival in the states, but nothing on her parents, or a previous husband.

Wow, a lot of info! Actually, I was unclear, and was interested in the information about Eliza Williamson Bell prior to her arrival in the US and looking for Livian Williamson's relatives might have been an option. Unfortunately, there is no one by that name in subsequent census records. Do you know if this Maria Williamson is the person mentioned living with Thomas and Eliza Bell? If so, the 1860 listing her as a male was incorrect. However, I will follow the Maria you mentioned. Thanks so much!

Thank you, and I apologize for being unclear in my quest. I was interested in Eliza Williamson Bell's family and info before arriving in the US. I was trying to find Livian Williamson in subsequent census records and turned up nothing. I have tried to find anyone researching this Bell family line that may have had more luck finding something about Eliza's Irish heritage. Thank you for the information you have supplied.
