Looking for descendants of Bridget Shevlin and James Bannon of Huntingdon. They were married in Rawdon Qc and lived in Huntingdon. Her mother Margaret Woods Shevlin lived with them and her uncle Felix Woods was a priest there.

Hi I have been trying to trace some Bannons that got a land grant in 1820s in Rawdon or Brandon township. Patrick, Thomas, James, Edward and John . I am hoping to connect them with my GG Grandfather Patrick Bannon .I have seen some Bannens in Huntington during my search.

I am doing research of the early settlers to the valley for the CVHS and Bannons are one of those families. I also work at a senior's home and one of our tenants is Bill Bannon who is a grandson of James and Bridget Bannon. I have a photo of them and some others. Would love to share all info with you. Hope to hear from you.

Hi,
I have been researching the Bannon line off and on for a few years now, it is difficult and there are gaps here and there. The worst problem is the fact that they keep using the same names over and over in every generation. I found the papers where they put in for a land grant, it is dated 1821 and there was Patrick 33 yrs. old, married with 1 son and 2 dau. then Thomas,29, married with 1 dau., then James,34, married with 1 son and 1 dau., then Edward,27, married with 1 son and finally John,26, married with 1 son. Whether or not they all got land, I don't know, but it is about that time that Patrick, James and John seemed to have come here for land. Maybe the others stayed in Rawdon or went elsewhere,Ontario or the USA, I don't know. Bill Bannon's grandparents are James Bannon and Bridget Shevlin, but he has no idea who James' parents were. He had a picture of James and Bridget and he also has an older picture of a Michael Bannon and Johanna McCarthy, age and time wise, they could be the parents of James, but I have no proof of anything. The Huntingdon website has great records for the protestant births, etc. but there is not much for the Catholic records and the Bannons were Catholic. James was born in/or about 1851 and he died in 1928. Michael was born in 1822 and died in 1883. I am sure that Michael is a son of one of the five Bannon boys that were mentioned on the land grant, but which one I don't know. Bill's father was named James Edward Bannon, but the Edward mentioned on the land grant never seemed to have come here. Bill knew she was from Rawdon and he also remembers hearing about her mother and the Rev. Woods. So it is possible that James was visiting Uncles and Aunts in Rawdon and he met Bridget. Are there any Bannons in Rawdon now??

Edward (Ned) Shevlin was my ggfather and brother to Bridget.
I have:
Brigitt Mary Shevlin daughter of Edward Sr. and Margaret Woods was born in St Alphonse on Oct.20, 1859 and christened Oct 22. She married James Bannon, son of John Bannon and Mary Cobb on Oct 16, 1888 in St Joseph's, Huntingdon Qc. James was born there.

Felix Woods (priest) was transferred to St Joseph Parish in 1869 where he served until his death Nov. 26, 1887 (55 yrs). He was buried in the church on the Gospel side. A commemorative plaque on the alter honors his service. He was the first priest born in Rawdon.

Margaret Woods died April 9,1904 in Huntingdon.

Could you verify any of this please?

Thank you

It seems to be the same info as I have, Mary Cobb though was actually Margaret Cobb and I don't know if it is an error or not, but I have a picture of one of the Bannon stones and Bridget's last name was spelt Shevlen. The more I dig into the Bannon history, I am starting to think that the Bannons in Rawdon and the Bannons here were 2 different families! Things just don't add up time wise and age wise. I thought that maybe James had met Bridget when he visited relatives in Rawdon but then Bill told me the other day that Bridget was actually hired by the church to be Father Woods' housekeeper and that was how she had met James Bannon. So I will have to keep digging some more!
