I have foung NUMEROUS posting stating that Gabriel Fowlkes was born abt 1696 and came from Denbighshire Wales, but have never seen confirmation. Looking to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks

I have not found good documentation either. Here are 4 links to messages on Genforum which deal with the question of Gabriel's Denbighshire origin.

I certainly wish we had a little better proof.

The root spelling for Fowlkes was Vaulks and that was from the family who came from whales and the isle of white.

Your comment about the root spelling of the name being Vaulks is interesting. Have you located the family in Wales or on the Isle of Wight prior to their arrival in America?

I'd be interested in knowing the variant spellings others have run across on our line. Besides Fowlkes, I've seen Foulkes, Foulks, Faulkes, Faulks, and Fulks (but not on my direct line). Can anyone else add some to this list?

I can add another variant spelling: Fults. My great-aunt and I have been tracing our family Fults roots, and we found that within two or three generations, the name changes from Fults to Fulks. The family rumor (still trying to prove) is that the name was changed by railroad company where an ancestor was employed.

I also trace my Fults/Fulks/Fowlkes line back to Gabriel. I only recently made this link to him, so I have not yet done much searching in the Denbighshire area yet. I'd be interested in communicating with others who are also doing research on him. My e-mail is mcgeemeredith@hotmail.com

Thanks,
McGee
