My great grandfather was Crawford WATERS of Screven County. I am trying to trace his family back to when they first came to America from Europe. It is believed they came from Scotland by way of Switzerland. His ancestor's name was John Hanil Waters, also spelled "Walter." We have lots of Pengree, Freeman, Parker and Sasser names in the family tree if anyone is looking for information on their connection to the Waters. Hughes was my Great Grandmother's maiden name (Martha Ada Hughes). I would also like information on that branch of the family.
I also connect to this family through Caroline Pengree b. 4-28-1822 m. Owen Smith and their son Owen Rhett Smith. I have additional information I am willing to share.
There were two Waters families in Screven County in the late 1790s.
John Hanil Walters was the son of Johannes "Hans" Walter, Sr. who came to SC from Switzerland. His son, John, came into Georgia where he met Anna "Catherine" Dusseign and married her in Effingham Co. They had two children which were entered in the Ebenezer Church record. I believe John returned to SC, possibly settling in Orangeburg County.
The other was John M. Waters, 1720-1775, who was born in NC and also died there. He came to Georgia in the 1760s and received land that is in present Screven on the Savannah River. He married a Mrs. Messer who may have been Elizabeth Brunson. There was a close relationship between the two families.
John and Mrs. Messer had the following children:
1. John C(alvin?) m. Mary Eliza Leighy
2. Margaret m. Lewis Lanier, Sr.
3. Isaac Sr. m(1) Unknown, m(2) Aracy
4. George m. Abba Mills
5. Catherine m. Thomas Pengree
6. David m. Rebecca
7. Michael Sr. m(1) Elizabeth Pengree, m(2) Mary "Polly" Bolton.
I have done quite a bit of research trying to separate out and identify various members of these two families, but there is still a lot to do. John supposedly went back to NC at the beginning of the Revolution to protect the family. He died shortly after getting there. After the Revolution these children returned to Georgia and reclaimed their father's land.
I am willing to swap, so let me know. Patty
While it's true there were two WATERS families in Screven County, I think you have mixed some of the families together. The last four children you mentioned in your list were actually the children of John Hanil and Catherine Dusseign. John Hanil came from SC, but stayed in Screven, where the family still lives. My grandmother, Blanche Waters Tempel, is related to him through the youngest son, Michael and his first wife, Elizabeth Pengree.
Much of my information came from a Sylvania newspaper clipping of my grandmother's, and from a book on the county I found in the Sylvania Public Library several years ago while visiting for a family reunion. I would be glad to share more info with you to straighten out the two families.
I would love to share info. Many researchers have been trying to sort out these two families for years. Unfortunately, much info is suspect or taken for proof because it has been around so long. I am still trying to wade through available deeds, estate records, etc. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Does anyone have information on the ancestry of Isaac WATERS who appears in the 1830 and 1840 Screven County Census'?
The Isaac Waters on the 1830 and 1840 Screven census is the son of Isaac who died in Bulloch 1828. This is confirmed by the land records of Screven...... His land was foreclosed due to being mortgaged and I do not know what happened to him after that time.
The Isaac Waters on the 1830 and 1840 Screven census was married to a Jane Newton and had a son Newton Ezra Waters. This is all the information I have on him.
There were five Isaac Waters' in the Bulloch/Screven Co area. Isaac Sr., d. Dec 1827. His son, Isaac Jr., m. Sally Hendrix and they were in Screven Co. This Isaac died in the 1840s. He also is said to have had a son Isaac. As I am researching Hendricks, I would love to find his descendants. The only unidentified Isaac in Ga in 1860 was in Putnam, but I don't know if this is the same one. Still working on him.
Another Isaac is the son of John Waters and Patsy Hendrix, sister of Sally. John was the brother of Isaac Jr.
Isaac, b. 1804, Bulloch Co, was, I believe, the son of John F. Waters and Millie. Isaac m. Jane Barber and they had 9 ch. Jane m(1) Ezra Newton who died ca 1842 Bulloch Co. Jane and Ezra had one child, Ezra Newton, Jr.
Isaac Waters, b. 1848, Ware (now Clinch) Co, s/o James, and Lucinda Bagley, another son of Isaac Sr. and brother of John and Isaac Jr. Patty
