Hello,

Poznan is quite a distance from Kalisz (where my family come from, or at least post 1900) but if you have a few precise questions please email me at

Kristian,

My great grandmother was Irene Kaczmarek wo lived in Hadlie Sklarskie Rzeszuw Poland in the late 1800's, she married Matelus Sebzda and later moved to Austria. Their son Antoni Sebzda came to America in the early 1900's and married Martha Smerczak. these were my grandparents who lived in Springville NY. Does any of this look farmiliar?

Hello,

HadLE Szklarskie, Rzeczow is quite a distance from Kalisz (where my family come from, or at least post 1900) so there is unlikely to be a connection. You say your family moved to Austria, well the part of Poland they came from was probably over the border from Russian Poland and in Austrian Poland (which was called Galica -mind my spelling though!). Kalisz was in Russian Poland. The Prussian, Austria-Hungarian and Russian empires spinelessly divided Poland between them in the 1790's. In brief (and not questionable) Poland did not 'exist' before 1918 and Pilsudski's declaration.

My grandmother, Anna Kaczmarek, was married to a Franciszck Cichy. They lived in Lubin
Kroin, Konin. I have no idea where they
originally came from but I do have their parents names. Let me know as it is strange as you are looking up both of these names.

Hello,

How very strange you are looking for both these surnames and there is even one more coincidence:

My side:

Stanislawa Karpinska married Franciszek Cichy
Rosalia Karpinski (sister to above) married Kaczmarek.

Both families came from the area north west (i.e. Blizanow) and also north east (i.e. Borkow) of Kalisz city (Poland).

Both these surnames are very common to the two areas mentioned - I have just come back from them (Poland).
