Randy, I have information for you. Your grandfather's parents were Daniel (died 1904) and Margaret Driscoll, from Kilrush in county Clare.(records on file there). Michael was born 25 January 1866, I think in Ireland. I have his wife as Kate Newbach. Their five children were born in New Britain, CT. Michael's brother John (b. 1870) had a son Thomas, Sr. b. 1898, whose son Thomas Jr. was gov. of CT.
So you are cousins, I guess.
I am not sure how we are related -- my great grandmother was a Meskill and she lived in New Britain, but she is not in Daniel's family tree.

I have a relative who has some information on the Meskill's from County Clare Ireland(about 1838) to the New Britain CT area (around 1872/1873). This is how to check our her site:

1. go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com
2. click on View Freepages directory
3. Click on genealogy
4. Click on the letter "I"
5. Go to IrishAncestors.netgenealogyHomepage by Irish ancestors
6. Search the site for the name "Glackin" (my relative)
7. go to the 7th section which is entitled Family Chronology by MSJenkins.

At Margaret's site, she has information on a Margaret McCormack and John Meskill's family that began in County Clare in the 1840's and came to the New Britain CT area in the 1870's.
We have other relatives in the area but I am not sure exactly how, or if we are related. My mother(who is deceased)knew both Tom, the ex-govenor and his sister Mary, who is a nun.

Thanks!

Thank you, Martha. You have given me a treasure trove of information. I have been looking at County Clare records at the local Family History Center, but couldn't find much. This Family Chronology give me plenty of leads to follow. I don't see Honora, my ancestor, but I think she was an aunt of John, and came to this country before he did. She may have been the reason he came to New Britain. I have the feeling there were a great many Meskills in New Britain in the late 1800s.

You are welcome Pat. Glad to be able to share. I met Margaret (who put together the information) on-line as she was looking for information on my grandfather. I live in NJ now but most of my family remained in the New Britain area. Where are you located? My sister and I went to the "Ols" St mary's cemetary and there were quite a few Irish buried there. I am still looking for the connection, if any, between the Meskill's and Glackin's.

In the process of researching the Meskills of Connecticut (my mother is a Meskell), I picked up the following information about your branch of the Meskills.

The information I have about Michael Meskill differs with that provided in an earlier message board posting sent to you. I think there might be confusion of Michael Daniel Meskill (1899-1989) who is a descendant of Daniel Meskill and Margaret Driscoll, and an ancestor of the former CT governor Thomas Meskill, with Michael M. Meskill (1866-abt 1930) who is a descendant of James Meskill and Catherine Carmody. Based on the info you gave, (“married to Kate, with 5 children Thomas, Cornelius, Augustus, Lawrence, and Jane”) Michael M Meskill is your ancestor.

Based on vital records from New Britain city hall, census records, city directory, and cemetery records, I have the following information. Michael M. Meskill, husband of Kate Newback (Nienbash) was born Oct 1866 in CT. He was the one of 4 children of Thomas Meskill and Jane Craig/Carrick. Thomas was the son of James Meskill and Catherine Carmody per his death certificate.

Catherine Carmody lived in New Britain CT from at least 1870 until 1887 with her son Thomas and his 3 sons: James, John T and Michael M. In 1887 Catherine moved to Waterbury CT, where she died 9 Mar 1888 at age 80. Per her death certificate she was born in Ireland, as were her parents, Michael Carmody and Ann Ryan. She is buried in Old St Mary’s Cemetery in New Britian.

Her son Thomas Meskill was born in Ireland about 1829-32. He married Jane Craig/Carrick on 30 Nov 1860 at St Mary’s in New Britain CT. Their children were: James b. abt 1862, John T. b. abt 1864, Michael M. b. abt Oct 1866, and Frances b. Mar 30, 1868. Thomas died 8 October 1884 in New Britain CT. The Hale Connecticut Cemetery Inscription records the monument inscriptions as: “Thomas Meskill, died Oct. 8, 1884, age 55 yrs., Native of Carhuemore, Co Clare, Ireland.” and “Jane Meskill, died Jul 3, 1868, age 35 yrs. Native of Mulough Co. Clare, Ireland.”

Thomas and Jane’s son, Michael and his wife Kate/Katie Newback/Nienbash had 5 children, born in New Britain CT: Thomas b. 25 August 1890; Augustus b. 12 Nov 1893; Jane b. 18 November 1894; Cornelius b. 6 August 1900; and Lawrence b. 17 September 1902. I did not find a marriage certificate in New Britain for Michael and Kate.but the June 1900 census says they were married 10 years.

I have census listings for this branch from 1870 through 1930. The1870 census for New Britain CT lists Thomas Maskil age 38, James age 8, John age 6; Michael age 4; Catherine age 63, plus Matthew age 27, and Simon Maskil age 27. I believe Matthew and Simon are from my branch, sons of John Meskill and Mary McCormack, and perhaps cousins. The 1880 census is much the same. The 1900 census lists Michael Meskill born Oct 1866 at 161 Hart St New Britain CT; his wife Kate E. born March 1869; sons Thomas and Agustus; and daughter Jane L. 1910 shows Michael and family (including Lawrence age 7) in New Haven CT. They remained in New Haven for the next 2 census.

I would be happy to send you what I have if you want to send your snail mail address to me at KJ4N@cox.net. Kathleen Foran
