Oral tradition says James Covell, born 1623 in England, married a Wampanoag woman in Edgartown, (Martha's Vineyard) circa 1660.

Their children were:
James born about 1660; married Abigail Smith
Ezra born about 1661; died of small pox
Joseph born about 1662; married Alice Palmer
Philip born about 1667; married Elizabeth Atwood

Any information on this would be appreciated.

Carolyne,

As I understand it James Covel b. 1620 of London married an Indian woman named 'Unk' in Edgartown and had the four children you describe. His brother also came to American and was born in 1623 in England. Note only one 'l' in the name at this time.

My father has more details.

I was referring to the brother Ezra (b. 1617). Here is a website that has very good details on the Covel family. A bit hard to jump around with no links but it does have numbers for individuals. Number 4 is the James you refer to.

I have not seen the following book, but it says it has details on the Wampanoag Indians of the Martha's Vineyard area so it might talk about the marriage of James with the 'unknown' indian woman. 'Unk' I guess means unknown.

Would also appreciate any info you find out.

I just found your posting on RootsWeb and its pretty much in agreement with my info. I was hoping someone could come up with the name of the Wampanoag woman. According to my info James was the son of Robert Covell & Alice Goldfinch. My ancestor was Joseph Covell, b. c1662, m. Alice Palmer; their son Joseph Jr., b. 1694, m. Hannah Lamb; their son Ebenezer, b Nov 19, 1727, m. Martha Whitmore; their daughter, Martha, b. June 26, 1766, m. Richmond Talbot; their son Aaron, b Feb. 4, 1798, m. Phoebe Taylor; their son, William Harrison Talbot, b. March 14, 1819, m. Mary Terry; their son William Aaron, b. Jan. 31, 1848, m. Martha Mahaffey; their son Benjamin Franklin Talbot, b. April 7, 1877, m. Grace Morley. He was my maternal grandfather.
Please let me know if you've heard any more about the Wampanoag woman.

The biggest clue we've had so far is the following:

Southold Town Records (Suffolk County, NY) by J. Wickham Case
Vol 2. p.74

15th day of September...Anno Domini:1693
"Matthew Mayhew Of Marthas Vineyard Esq. having two Indian servents the one named Keiape the other James Covell bound for the full term of seven years" sold these servants to Jacob mayle.

p. 75
Jan 6 1696/7
Jacob Mayle of the city of New YOrk sold his claime and right over Keiape "otherwise called Felix"

The above means we have an Indian Servant named James Covell, who was living on Martha's Vineyard in 1693, and whose service was sold to Jacob Mayle. This could be James Sr.'s son James. I seem to remember reading that he had some financial trouble while in Martha's Vineyard. Need to check the town records on the Covell's again.

Hi, fellow Covell descendants:

Thanks for your research which I have just found. I am a descendant of James Covell of Martha's Vineyard, through Joseph I and Joseph II, Ebenezer, Samson, Rev. Joseph Smith, Charles Heber, William Simpson, and Charles V. Covell. I saw graves of Ebenezer and Samson and their wives in Killingly, CT last month. Would like to get further family history. Please do respond.

Cheers, Charlie (Charles Van Orden Covell JR.

You sent a reply to a query I posted on 25 Nov 2007 under the name Martha Edwards. I no longer have an Ancestry account myself, so my daughter is allowing me to use her's. Any further correspondence you can send to me at chube132@aol.com. My Covell ancestry is as follows: Joseph, Joseph, Jr., Ebenezer & wife Martha Whitmore; their daughter Martha married Richmond Talbot; their son, Aaron, married Phoebe Taylor; their son, William Harrison, married Mary Terry; their son William Aaron, married Martha Mahaffey; their son Benjamin Franklin Talbot was my maternal grandfather. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Martha Edwards
