I am looking for information regarding an orphanage that was in Cedar Rapids Iowa that was in operation in the 40's. Looking for information regarding my dad and his sister who were living there for a time.

This is a negative response, in that I am unaware of any orphanage in the 1940s in Cedar Rapids. There was a special census of dependent children in 1933---as far as I know they did not take the names of children, just statistics---and the census lists a Home for the Friendless, no address, under private auspices, for 52 dependent children.

I am aware of a few homes for children which are listed in directories of the 1970s---Boys' Acres (in Bertram, using Cedar Rapids post office), Cedarwood Boys' Group Home, Children's Home of Cedar Rapids, and Maplewood.

The front pages of some city directories contain classified listings of various institutions, etc., and you may be able to find one for the 1940s. I know of one title, but I don't know what years it was published : "The Evening Gazette's Cedar Rapids City and Business Directory."

Do you know how to find a copy of this 1933 census? I found one for 1930 but not 1933.

The following bibliographic citation is for a 125-page printed book that is a report of the 1933 census. I saw the book at the New York Public Library. I know nothing about the manuscript schedules that may have been used by the census-takers.

UNITED STATES. Census, Bureau of the. Children under Institutional Care and in Foster Homes, 1933: Dependent and Neglected Children under the Care of Public and Private Institutions or Agencies, Not Including Juvenile Delinquents, prepared under the supervision of Dr. Leon E. Truesdell. Washington, D.C.: Govt. Print. Off., 1935. iv, 125 p. The bulk of the book (p. 63-124) has title: "Statistics for Individual Institutions," and is arranged by state, thereunder by auspices: state, county, religious, etc. Omits street addresses of institutions.

I was there in the late 1940's. A few years ago I tried to find out what happened to the records of children there, with no success. The staff at the Linn County Genealogy Society think the records no longer exist.

I have been trying to find out information about my dad. Actually his mom was remarried and married a man by the name of Tom Barker.
I'm sure you're right about the records no longer existing, it's said a part of my dad's and his sister's history are gone.
All I know is that my dad and his sister was placed in an orphanage, he ran away from it, but we have pictures or I should say we did have pictures, but now I can't even find them.
Thank you so much.

Thank you. I'm not sure, but I thought my dad said Cedar Rapids, maybe it was Des Moines. He's gone now, so I'm just kind of shooting from the hip so to speak.
