Surnames: Stephens
The attached photo is of my 2x great grandfather Wilfred Stephens who was a Royal Engineer with the British Army having been commissioned to Fiji in 1875 to survey the new capital for Fiji.

The photo we were told is a Bengal Lancers uniform when he apparently served in Ceylon, India before 1875. At this stage we have no dob, dod or parents and siblings for this man but have been told he is from Yorkshire but have no record of this taking place let alone being born there.

Any idea as to dating and where this photo could have been taken, uniform identification etc...

If you post the photo with these folks, they'll most likely be able to identify the uniform-

Thank you so much for that link...have registered and waiting for activation...

I have found which regiment the uniform belongs to and it is indeed a Bengal Lancer's uniform 18th regiment, but depending upon when he served his time there he was either with the 18th regiment of Bengal Cavalry before 1886 or the 18th Regiment of Bengal Lancers after 1886.

I contacted the British library about this matter, not so much uniform id but registration details of this man but nothing from this site and the lady responding was fantastic in informing me on information and other resources as to where to go...

Thanks kindly, will keep ppl here informed incase someone else also has a relation in the same uniform.
